POD studio used as power amp??

Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting the POD UX2 to do some home recording.

On a side note, I would also like to get the Mesa Recording Recto preamp also for home based recording.

My question would be that, though at home I won't be running the preamp through cabs(DI straight into UX2), can the POD still be used as a power amp?

Say I wanna bring the recto out to play, eg studio, can the POD be used as a power amp then? It sounds crazy but the diagram on the line6 page says that it can be lined out to quote 'powered monitors or mixer/AMP and monitors". http://line6.com/podstudioux2/specifications.html

I only have a brief understanding of pre and power amps and why they're needed so do excuse me if I sound like a complete noob. I also read somewhere that heads can be hooked up to be used as power amps so if anyone can enlighten me on this issue you have my deepest thanks.

The reason it can be lined out to speakers and headphones is because it has cab simulator ( I think)so the sound that comes out won't sound like crap. Thats all I know, to use as a power amp I doubt so. But expert users can tell you more.

it can be lined out, meand it doesnt provide any power to the speakers, powered monitors have their inbuilt power amp, so the answeer is no, you cannot use the pod as a power amp, its just a preamp.

Ok, so anyone can shed some light on how to hook up the pre amp to a head to use the head as a power amp?

What amp head are you using?

1. Depending on what sort of effects loop the head has, you MAY be able to get away by plugging the Pod's output in to the Return
2. If the cleans on the head are good, you MAY also be to plug it straight into the input and hope that the pre-amp doesn't colour the tone that much.

the ux 2 is more of an external soundcard meant for recording instead of being used as a preamp through the effect loop of amphead

Another problem is the powering. Aint the ux2 powered by usb? If the pod ux2 can be used as a preamp, you would need to connect to laptop and power it up before connecting it to the amphead. Laptop would be an extra device acting as a power supply for it, a bit funny imho, using the laptop just for powering

to use as preamp, i would think the pod desktop and floorboard one be more suitable

Thanks for the help guys, now lets focus on the mesa recto preamp itself.

Putting the UX2 aside, how do I hook up the preamp to any studio's head to use that head as a power amp? I heard it can be done.

Yes, you can. BUT first, what sort of head are you using and what sort of inputs does it have? Not all heads are have the same sort of inputs.

seeing as how i'm selling a recto preamp i thought i should chip in..

pod as a power amp: no..but you can use it as a cabinet emulator if you so desire - turn off all the effects/amp blocks and run the output of the recto pre into the pod's input.

recto pre to any head - recto's output into the amp's effects loop return - this bypasses the amp's preamp section and lets you use it as a power amp. master volume on the amp will function as normal.

recording scenario 1: mesa recording outputs -> pod inputs
recording scenario 2: mesa direct output -> pod input (use cabinet emulation on POD/cabinet impulses (google it)
recording/live scenario 3: mesa direct output -> amp efx loop in -> cabinet - mic'd up. best way to use it IMO.

Thanks dude, best advice

May I inquire how much you bought and are selling the recto? And how close is the sound to the actual head, the dual rectifier am I right?
