Just try to immerse yourself into the lyrics.

Understand the lyrics and the mood of the song.Figure out the emotions and the atmosphere of the song.

Once you've done that, memorising should be easy.

Next step ahead is to try to convey the same dynamics of the message of the song to the audience.

---------

Good artistes to try to emulate, vintage classic stuff like Joni Mitchell(Both Sides now),or maybe newer contemporary stuff from Joss Stone or Avril.

Sing along with an acoustic band first (to train your pitch)and work from there.

My 2cents . :D

actually memorizing songs are the easy part... just get a walkman/mp3/discman and listen to the song everywhere... on the bus, walking home, anywhere... as time goes by... shdnt be a problem remembering..
Dang.. That's the whole problem. I don't have an mp3 player or whatever else. I need money to invest in one! Ahh..

come on la pepper.. old school is in.. go cash converter and buy those bulky cassette tape recorders.. lil investment, plus got nice analog echo and tape sound sumore... auto efx!

 Same as pepper, I don't have those portable MP3 player as well (what old school?!). But i will invest in one soon. Just need to take time off to sim lim or somewhere to shop.

I guess $150 would get me a decent no brand 1G MP3 player. One of my friends advised me to buy 2nd-hand one from ebay. What do you guys think? Any more suggestions?

And which brand are you guys using?
How much the price range?
Are they any good?
Where did you buy them from?
Which brand is comfortable?

ipod shuffle 1 gb-$1its small and handy, poket size.. but with no screen.a simple design suitable for all!

for those who dun have a mp3 player... just go to cash converters... buy those tape recorders which are big and can carry on ur sholder... den blast the volume and groove while walking.... lol!

newbie guy or gal - or others... there no easy way or short cut..the answer is HARD WORK...

1) Listen to the song over & over & over again...singing along each time until U remember more & more of the lyrics.... it will greatly help in the memory bit.... after a few times of singing along you'll suddenly find - "Hey I know the words by heart"...

2) as mentioned by Snuffapagus...tryto understand the lyrics and use it in your own context - It may actually help you emote & present it in your own style.

3) What songs you shoud do obviously depends on whether you doin the club scene (shud be more top 40s radio stuff), D & D gigs ete (more familiar classic stuff in whatever genre) or jammin? (Anything under the sun)

I like Bonnie Raitt, The go gos, Enya, heart etc

In fact, Girls need to work harder. They need to face gender discrimination.

really? Gee... I would have thought the opposite was true coz every damm agent and many clubs ....1st thing they ask me..."U all got girl singer or not"....and by "Girl SInger" they actually mean GOOD, SEXY LOOKING girls who are prepared to wear low cut /mini skirts and strut their their stuff eye candy style on stage - to quote agents "Ah cannot sing so well oso never mind but be good looking" ... many establishment still live by this concept of 2-3 sexy young things with 1 male keyboardist programing the music... not cool in my book...not cool at all, but thats the thrend...

Unless of course U mean girls having to work harder in ther recording industry thingy.... but then again again same analogies apply ...I guess...
