I had a similar problem not too long ago... I was using a strat copy with low power single coils. It really was a cheapo guitar... the neck fits fine for chording but when doing riff it was a bit hard some how the neck can't be compared to an Ibanez. My option was to get another guitar or to mod the strat copy. Initially I wanted to change the pickups and neck... then I was having the problem of what pickups to choose. 1st I totally hate the humming of the cheapo strat... so I went to check up what could be the prob. It was either the internal wiring or pickups... then I open the guitar body cavity and to my horror the internal was not properly done, wood was chipping and it was half painted.
So it boils down to the cost, if I were to change pickups, assuming 1 for 100 bucks that would be 300 bucks for 3 and the neck would be about 100-200 (didn't bother to check) and worst still the body wood doesn't seem reliable... all in all that guitar was meant to get me interested in guitar thru the shape of a strat... btw the guitar is merely a 100 bucks...
So my advise is to see what kind of guitar u have and what u don't like of it... if it is sound I think pickups or amps or even effects can help u... but if it is the physical part like shape then u might as well buy a new guitar not worth getting a new body and refit everything (aka custom made).
