Playing notes on different string but same fret

hi i got a very stupid qn. what is the "correct" way of playing notes that are on the same fret but but different string? do you use the same finger or a different finger when playing the next note?

eg. 1st string 12th fret (1st finger), 2nd string 12th fret (1st finger)

or

1st string 12th fret (1st finger), 2nd string 12th fret (2nd finger)?

same finger.

actually.. see hows the case like.. if u need other fingers to run for other notes.. den using same finger will be more conveinet.. otherwise its up to u.. some people fingers dont have the strength to fret many strings at once..

eg. barre chords.

for me it's
1st string 12th fret (1st finger), 2nd string 12th fret (1st finger)

but in the end it boils down to personal preference.

definitely personal preference. an individual versed in the sweep technique would tell you to fret both strings with one finger only (index), then pick both notes in a single motion, successively.

your finger strength and which finger you use will affect the feel of a song you're playing... so depending on how you want your song to sound like, use whichever finger you want, then again, if you're shredding or playing a solo, designated fingers would be appointed to each fret....

It depends.

If you are using the same finger, for example, as Sub points out, for sweep picking, make sure you 'roll' the finger so that one note does not bleed into the other. You can vary this for a more staccato or 'bleed' effect.

!?!

at e end of e day, u hafta be comfy playing it. people can guide u, but u haf to find e feel yourselves. and when u foundd it, playing 2 diff notes on similar frets but diff strings would be a breeze :)

p/s sweeping picking is killing me, im practising for nights & i cant thrash out some clean sweeping sound, mainly jus muddy. any guides?

Go real slow man. When you drag the pick down/upwards, make sure every note is clear, played slow of course. Give yourself a while, sweeps don't come easy. But when you finally get the hang of it, all the other patterns will be much easier to master. If you can, try practicing on clean. Hope this helps :)

If you suffer from 'muddiness' this may be that you are leaving the finger on the note after you have played it. You must lift the finger off the note after it is picked so it does not carry on ringing. This is the difference between strumming a chord and sweeping.

i noe but i felt some retardation in the fingers *lolx* maybe need more practise..

thanks for the advice guys. i'd try to use 1 finger for all strings on the same fret but sometimes the next note would be too stacato. so i'd either barre the few successive strings or use a different finger for the next note on the same fret for more legato riffs. I asked this questions cos i was worried i might have a bad habit that would retard my playing progress. Well then i suppose the best would be flexible and use the appropriate techniques when needed.

IMO ... better to learn arpeggio 1st then goes into sweeping.
although both is about the same only thing is,
arpeggio - u let the string ring, sweep - u lift the string once it is picked.

just my 2¢
