playing method

interesting question there.. perhaps?

back to the main topic. Using your fingers to play has endless possibilities compared to using a pick. e.g. 3 fingers = 3 picks. The thumb for slap moves. Check out real players such as wooten for the details

there is also such thing as a thumb pick, so your other fingers still as free...

for me it's a personal preference

i've played classical guitar for many years and have grown accustomed to using fingers, specifically because with fingers I feel that I have more control over tone I want, can get bright or mellow when different parts of the song requires it.

in the end it really boils down to the sound you are hoping to get, period.

doesn't matter if the original was finger style or what. Look at cello, violin, etc. they're bowed string instruments, but sometimes they use fingers, or "slapped" with the bow(spiccato). they are innovative techniques, but does it mean they are wrong techniques? tell that to all the violinists in the world then.

i use fingers most of the time, but i have picks set aside if i need to use them for a particular song.

Totally agreed. Violin's best example. Built to be bowed, but can pluck when required. Awesome analogy.
