One guy told me , "it is better for a newbie to play in a band. you will learn more" isit true?

definitely true!

but of course, u need to have the fundamental knowledge in the instrument u play. if not, gasak-buta also won't work well...

i bet u know ur chords, a handful of scale patterns, how to apply them together, and can stay in rhythm rite? u hav got ur basic fundamentals then... of course when u do covers, that is something else then.

Being in a band force u learn a whole song and learn it well cos u don wanna be the person who drag the others down, learn how to play with others, improve ur timing, learn about dynamics, learn from each other by takin constructive criticism from one another, be creative as u think of new parts to play as u wanna avoid playin the same thing as ur keyboardist or guitarist. Well yeah, being in a band helps u improve :D

I actually learned better playing with the mat rocks in Tanglin Halt...U know thetype who can play highway star solo on a $30 kapok accoustic guitar with a 2cm action?

Another way I actually improved is playing along with the cassette (those days where got cd?)...I improved a hell of a lot...

Do this..by the tyme U get to playing in a band...u WILL rock...

Very correct...but you need to be progressive in terms of the type of songs you played wit your band....you should not be playing the same songs everytime you jam ....

To get more exposure

Well bro playing as a band tere's a lot of things u need to know:

1. Be committed to wat u have in store.

2. Keep an eye on the style and emotions of ur band members.

3. The concept of wat ur band is holding and make sure that all the band members follow the style of concept of the band.

4. Be honest to one another in the training or while practicing coz that will improve ur perfection of the song.

5. Don't get influnce with wat ur frens critics bout ur band.

6. All the band members must be punctual at all times during practices.

Well to tell u bro being in a band u will learn discipline, punctuality, responsible and lots more experiences....

Yes, provided the rest of the band got their basics covered already. By that, I mean when the guitarist could move his hand position from an A minor to a D chord without stumbling and falling all over the room.

And always get a good drummer -- the drummer is the glueth that holdth the bandth togetherth...I cannot stress this fact enough. When the drummer is weak, the band automatically suffers. And then your band practices would suck. And when that happens, you start questioning why you are even in a band. And then you start branching out and start mixing with the wrong crowd and start listening to techno and colouring your hair green and then you sell your guitar to go clubbing more often and before you know it, you are already fucked.

So yeah, get a good drummer.

that is exactly how i improved! but not good enough yet. And since i play mostly covers the improvising part is where i sucked at and sucked big time.

uhm. exaggerate much? haha agree with you that a good drummer's essential but look at it this way. I'm the drummer of the band I'm in and I'm almost totally a n00b. the band's where we all learn and grow together. it's nice to know that there are people who value the drummer though! there are quite a lot of jokes abt drummers out there. we don't get enough 'spect, lol.

actually what judaspiss said is true to some extent. the drummer more or less functions as a metronome for the entire band, if your metronome is going at 3/4 beat when you're playing at 4/4, how are you supposed to play?

it might not mean that you have to get a really good drummer to function as a band but I suppose the drummer would have to know some rudimentary knowledge of beats and rhythms no? Otherwise everyone would be playing off-beat, singing off-beat, and the whole song might end up sounding like rojak, everything just mixed together.

Well said by evry1..!

Its true tht by playing in the band u cn improve dramatically but u hav to b positive in accepting critism frm yur band mate...be it timing , punctuality , tempo , stage performance if there is...all nd to practise n practise correctly!

Always stay focus n positive !

Till then ..Cheers evry1 n Rock the music to yur hearts contempt!!!!
