hmm.. how do i connect my guitar to my pc?

depends of what kind of guitar

1) if its acoustic(non-semi)[meaning that it does not have a jack]:

you can do 3 things:

i) buy a mic, put it NEAR the soundhole, and plug the mic into the com's soundcard, either line-in or mic

ii) buy those below saddle pickups(below $20, i wouldn't recommend these as they do not truly capture the nice sound that an acoustic guitar produces), and plug it to your com's soundcard either line-in or mic

2) if its an electirc:

take ur cable and plug it into ur com's soundcard either line-in or mic, AND u gotta buy the 1/4" to 3.5mm jack converter, availible at most audio shops and sim lim towers

This will make the electric guitar sound like shit for a few reasons.
1. The impedence is mismatched. Sound card has too low an impedance that the guitar 'expect', resulting in signal loss.
2. The guitar sounds better when mic from an amplifier, direct sound too raw with too broad a frequency range.

There are many ways to do it. One convenient way to get an effect box/amp with emulated speaker out.

u can plug the electric guitar thru a DI box.....i'm using a behringer DI box which has a cabinet simulation....it's a cheap way to get a decent guitar sound thru u're computer...

You will also need to configure the audio properties on your computer to enable sound recording via the line-in or mic-in ports on the sound card. Otherwise you will not hear your guitar through the computer's speakers. You don't need any special software to hear your guitar through the computer unless you want to use amp/preamp emulating software. However I won't suggest playing your guitar through the PC directly too. It just sounds terrible.

What's your reason for playing guitar through the PC anyway?

Is there any difference if I plug it in either MIC or LINE IN? For me its Guitar - Amp - PC. The sound is pretty satisfying to me. I plug it into the mic hole

When recording audio (which include vocals, bass, keyboards, etc.), it's best to use an audio interface. The transfer is cleaner and there's little latency probs...

M-Audio Fast Track

Sinamex and Hung Brothers carry it. Not sure about the stock. For prices, please check it up yourself. :D

You still got to either use a mic like Shure SM57 or get a cabinet/speaker simulator with it. Not cheap in total, but I think its a good way to go.

there is this decent software amp called revalver that gives virtually 0 lag time.
It doesnt give you the best sound, but its gd for practise, and its free, some where on harmonycentral

From what i've read in previous posts, USB devices need to convert A/D and back, thus resulting in some latency (more compared to analog connections). How are the M-Audio USB interfaces, like the said Fast Track USB? Is the latency noticeable?

The mic and line inputs on the soundcard have different signal levels, I believe. Most noticeable different is the volume... Not sure if there are other implications.

Try tt Line 6 guitar port. Lets u choose different amps too. The dude in peace centre demo-ed it to me before. and its awesome.
