by figuring out songs with your ears rather than using tab,you train your hearing.You may not tab the songs 100% accurate but those mistakes eg,notes,phrase,rhythm etc you make will give you idea, creativity and style....Even professional player do not play exactly the same way or note per note when they are playing cover songs.eg,paul gilbert do not tab his songs and do not use tablature to play cover songs.

for me i learn from the tabs but i dont go note for note, just remember roughly where to play the notes and improv a little (though i aint good at that)

I personally feel that the key to playing by ear, is more to do with your knowledge of chords. If you know your way around the fingerboard, hell everything'll be easy, especially figuring out certain songs.

hate tabs...there is no "feel" in learning via tabs...

tabs i use for reference only..

imo those guitar player that play solely via tab lacks feel or improvisional skill..and lazy...haha

For me, I learn by tabs, because I want to learn that particular piece note for note. It gives me a certain satisfaction when after I nail the piece, I think "hey, I can do whatever (insert guitar hero) can do!" I love the challenge.
Of cos it's also much quicker than picking up by ear. Time is a rare commodity to me.

For me, I enjoy the ease of picking up songs FAST with my ears, because i session with bands alot. And most bands dont use tabs for their songs. I play in a pop band, I dont practice beforehand mostly, i just listen to demos, or just go straight in to the studio and whack. For more complicated pieces like DT which i did in the past, of course i have to listen to the music at home and figure out the runs. Harder than using tabs, but not impossible.

i find tabs too numbery. after a while of trying to concentrate, 4D combinations will come out, of which i have never won from reading tabs.
