Very necessary.
If you want to increase the height of the pickup, you will need the spring to "release/loosen" and allow the pickup to rise as you are adjusting the pickup screw and allow the pickup to stay at the height you want.
Without the spring, even if you unscrew the side screws all the way up, your pickup is going to stay at the bottom.
Unless if you are using a bigger size screw which also have to be screwed into the side of the pickup then to the wood, then there is a possibility of not using the spring. But then, this method is not a proper way or even a wrong way..

i c , thnx for your reply, the thing now is that, i had manage to let the pickups stay at the height without changing the screws, n without the springs, but the sound had change 
the humbucker had change to more like a single coil sound, bright.. and when i turn the tone knob to 0, there is no tone/sound at all, whereas it usually had...could it be tat i had spoil the pickup,wiring or s.ting while digging up the pickup??? any ideas??? thnx..

the spring in relation to pickup height, shud, in the most basic way, affect the "volume" of guitar sound projection. It shud not cause changes like having humbucker to single soil sound nor no sound when tone pot is at 0.
Most likely theres some problem in the circuit of the guitar thats causing the problem.
Bring it to guitar tech or someone who do wirings and stuff to check the best, imho.

tany: yup it drop in, but i manage to screw it on and adjust to an acceptble height to the strings.
PatheinRaindropMoe: yup, tats wat i think so too, maybe i had poke onto some wiring while trying to lift up the pu and screw.... will send it for repair since i was thing of changing a pu too.

without the spring to stabilize the pickup, won't it fall back down due to the string vibrations and body resonations?
