Hi Adrain

Welcome to Soft and am sure glad to hear that you are picking “Drumming”.

To answer your question. Not all Drummers went to a Music School, and also not all drummers are Self-Taught, usually a mix of both, somewhere, somehow in time, depending on what comes 1st when they started out drumming.

There are indeed many ways to learn drumming in a way eg Internet, Music School, through Friends, watching Drum DVDs, through Soft’s Drum Xchange Singapore Monthly Meetup etc etc.

My advice is in order to learn drumming in a most productive and effective manner (especially for NEW Drummers) is to seek and learn from a Drumming Instructor and get the Basics set right 1st – it’s very important, then decide for yourself later – how you wanna continue this drumming passion ? It’s up to you.

But whatever manner chosen to learn – Learn it correctly, and you will have to spend time practicing – or else you will find yourself stagnant after a while and give up….

Not to worry – there are many drummers here who will help you out.

Enjoy your stay at Soft Music

having a teacher is like having a catalyst. its individual preference.

a good teacher is hard to find. beware.

thanks for the info mates.

how bout the DD-65 that i mention?? izzit good or are there any other suitable gears for beginner???

i took up lessons to learn the basics then quit... then learnt myself. so i'm half half lah. haha..

Whether being coached by a teacher or self taught is better is highly subjective. It all depends on your learning style. It's like how different people have different approaches to studying. Some people absorb better with a teacher constantly breathing down their necks, while some others need more freedom and time to absorb.

So the question is, what do you feel is best for yourself? Having a teacher is always good. The thing you need to think about is how often do you need to be 'supervised' by a teacher and how much time you need to absorb (and practice) everything that you have learnt from each lesson. Another consideration is whether the teacher's approach to teaching suits you and how you can relate to your teacher. What suits one person might not suit another.

Personally, I think lessons are always good. In fact, learning from different teachers will open up your mind more. Then eventually you need to find your own style. The most important thing is to always keep an open mind.

Hope this helps :)

wow, even lacey duvalle was in two minds whether to enrol in a sch or whack the drums on her own..

niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..

i self learnt my way, only to correct my mistakes one by one after watching drumming vids on youtube (either way i am still learning as i go).

find something that suits yourself and play often with jamming mates. that should do the trick. (even air drumming/ using drumpad substitutes also work...ah whatever)

how good do u want to me and in wat application do you want to use ur drums in.
if its just for fun and you and a couple of guys get together and whack something. i feel no lessons okie is more than fine. but anything else from a couple of gigs for fun on the weekends to playing for ur church, i reckon lessons are the way to go. i mean you want to sound and look the best in front of people. secondly u wanna get gd faster more than slower right. lessons loh.
it all depends on wat level ur playing at and wat level u wanna be at.
