pick-ups?...preamps?...explanation please

could anyone explain what changing a preamp actually does to the sound and how it does dat? and if i had a j-bass and was looking to change to a more powerful pickup, what would u suggest? Also, since the j-bass is supposed to give you a mellow sound, would changing the preamp or pickups affect it and thus give it a brighter tone which defeats the purpose of the j-bass?

Get a j-retro preamp dude. =) If you want to swap the preamps on a j-bass, thats the preamp to get, but if you want to just swap the pickups, basslines singles would be nice.

yeah...get the hot stacks for your j if you want higher output. or you could get a clean booster pedal
