Peter - Jackson Metal Jam

Hi Peter,

Nice and very clean playing. But I wouldn't say that's very metal. Some feedback here.

- 0:35 sounds quite awkward. Sudden slow lick with sustained notes. Perhaps you can make a vibrato there.
- Do keep in a proper timing. I'm sure if you meant to do this but example on 1:20, you start a fast lick on a middle of a sustained chord. IMO you should start it on the next bar. The next bar is a fast progression, take advantage of it.
- The scales you use. (I don't know scales to save my life) Did you use any? Cause if you did, maybe you kinda match wrongly. Not sure how to say in words. Haha.

You got great technique in playing fast, man. The picking timing. You can be proud of your sweep. But work on the vibratos. See how Dhalif uses them. Once you do that, I'd like to see you a slow number.

Cheers!

Hey thanks for the comment!

To answer you question, yes, I did use scales, but only ONE and with a combination of modes. Most of the time I've been playing the E harmonic minor scale in different positions as I'm very fond of the middle eastern sounds, and that chromatic run you see somewhere in the middle is actually something I based off the Hungarian Minor or Double Harmonic Minor Scale.

Yeah, I do not know how to do a controlled vibrato as I only am familiar with the fast, aggressive rock/metal method. I'm already under the guidance of Dhalif on how to play with feel. I'm trying to use a metronome to train my vibrato at a slower pace. I dunno will that help??? I have no idea. I'm a mindless shredder trying to learn how to slow down, I do have a mind after all haha.

Well, thanks for the comments anyway!

Cheers ;)

You definitely have the chops down. I can hear bodom influences :)

most of it sounded very aimless like as if you were just running scales up and down the fretboard. Timing and accuracy could be improved as well for the alternate picking bits- you seem to have timing issues when you cross strings. Try to use economy picking. Instead of a strict up down motion when you cross a string you could go up down and cross to the next string with down up so that its one smooth downward motion as you go from string to string. Your vibrato as others have mentioned could be better.

Sweeps are nice and clean as far as I can tell.

Try to slow it down. A good example of this can be found here:

Vibrato is often one of the most underlooked techniques in guitardom.

Well i guess it's right to say there's "no right or wrong scale" for a particular progression especially if the progression is pretty much over a static chord...

One way to improve is probably on one hand to study up your scales, theory wise. Along the way, picking up riffs from your favorite influences. However for improvising, it's all about phrasing phrasing phrasing. It's very important to tune your ear to know what note to start and end on, as well as everything in between. There's no hard and fast way again. It's YOUR style...

Tone wise i think it's not too bad. Experiment bro... I'm also using a UX2 with pod farm. :D Quite happy with it too...

Best Regards
Nick Matthew
