Performing at a lousy equipped gig

=MadWereWolfBoy

I was busy studying for my Os and it was the last thing on my mind. And damn, I thought they would be sensible enough to go online to search or ask around. But they didn't.

However, in the end, someone saved them apparently. They managed to rent amps just in time for prom night which was only three days after the audition. They also got a sound crew. Damn, I wonder how did they do it within three days when they did nothing for almost three months.

I think the main problem lies in the fact that most school gigs are put together by student council members/student leaders/prefects that have no idea of the costs or requirements to put on a show.

I remember back in secondary school there was this time when a bunch of choir folks wanted to put together a paid gig that would be open to public in the school auditorium. One of them, my friend, approached me to help them with the organising, and informed me of the fact that they had no bands in the lineup and had no idea where to find any, no idea what equipment they needed, and no idea how much they should charge for tickets. They had no idea if we needed an emcee, no idea what a setlist was. They literally thought they could call a few bands, tell them a show was coming up, and leave the rest to them.

A more recent example would have been the show they put up at the NP atrium a few months ago. I'm sure that anyone who performed that day can attest to how bad the equipment was. From what I gather, it was the exact same issue; the people in the organising committee had no idea what the bands needed, and a sizeable chunk of the lineup was a "I know somebody who knows somebody who can probably put me in contact with somebody" kind of thing.

MadWereWolfBoy and niteblade, you guys are really lucky! at least ur school is willing to fork out some money to make the event really happen. In my school, the teachers only give VERBAL support and money wise, definitely not. They even find us a nuisance when we go bother them about finding better equips for the gigs. lol

do the A7X.throw the mic on the ground.throw the guitars and drumstick.kick the bass drum.

eh some fest right? That sound was very very shitty considering the fact that the soundmen were supposed to be professionals.
If you talk about feedback in venues that don't have a professional/experienced soundman, it isn't as bad as saying an experienced one screwing up a gig for a gig like this.

Haha no actually, Rockefella is a fund raising concert. So the total collection from tickets totals up to be $8000. I've asked to push the budget beyond $1k but they wouldn't barge... So... Its a relatively small budget compared to the collection.

Btw, the bands play for free. But... there's this mystery top price for the best band... Wonder what it is this year! Haha.

=SherT

Was it the one where the show suddenly stopped because some old people came and disturb say cannot play? and smth to do with SPCA nearby?

=kerplunk182

eh you're not in cjc are you? I'm from there and umm, their renting from outside. I didnt play cus i was missing a... guess what, DRUMMER. again.

=SherT

Was it during the open-house?
If so then...
Yes haha. I was there too.
The cymbal stand constantly came loose and a cymbal fell. Poor drummer of Cardinal Avenue.. :(

Eh, haha Kerplunk182's from IJTP i think. I'm from CJ... I mean WAS. Like some lao jiao.

Who're you btw? Maybe I know you!

Pedialite: o.o er no, I don't believe so. This was like, more than 3 years ago. Haha.

Jamella: Don't know what the show was for. I just remember the drumset was the one that they left to rot in the studio for the longest time ever. They only dragged it out early that morning before the show. You should have been there when armchair played, damn cartoon sia without the bass drum skin. Eventually they found one and slapped it on right before the second set of bands went up.

I'm Morgan, you won't know me unless if theres a list that's titled metalheads/assholes. Are you bose?

Nope I'm not Bose... Bose is my Hong Kong Mafia boss... I'm his kah kia! =P

Haha j/k but I'm not Bose... ya, one difference is that he's pro, I'm not...

i learned it the hard way.. the gig was only confirmed the day before.. the other band had a drummer who broke his leg the day before.. the mics were turned off halfway through as the powers that be had 'meetings'.. had to scream to the audience.. the amps power supply was faulty.. horrible experience thought me one thing.. school gigs.. sucks... looks good on paper.. but till the hierarchy of the school learn to appriciate rock music and supports it financially and otherwise. only then will rock be universal..cmon principals...

well, why not try getting an events co to do it? just some basic eqpt rental... can ask sch to pay, or route it into the school PA system via your guitar amps, then EQ it on the mixer board.

if not, some 250W PA speakers could do u just fine. and oh yes, your amps can allow u to hear what u are playing too. they act as monitors. no need to rent. haha.

so if you're complaining about crappy school systems, maybe can pm me for some eqpt help. i'm a techie and person who plays virtually everything in a band. lol. tried all roles b4.

LOL. The only thing I'm not happy with playing in school gig is there was once a terrible matter or should is say funny. So it was a school gig and we got the AVA boys to do the sound (damn i can't trust them). So when I asked them to mic the guitar and bass amps they said can't be done because there will be feedback. I explained. They won't listen. Imagine how bad the gig sounded. Sound from vocal mic come out from back and side of the hall. Guitar and Bass sound come from the stage. It's freaking funny. I don't get why will there be feedback when the guitar amp and the PA System are in 2 different system. It's just so funny la.

st pats has a jamming studio and quite reliable laney amps , a nice pearl target set and paiste cymbals and all plus feedback amps , mixer and 3 mics , a recording studio equipped with a brand new mac , state of the art shit and all . but you gotta have connections with the students council and ava to use it hahaha .

lol
