any first hand guitars and overdrive/distortion pedals to recommend to play songs from bands like avenged sevenfold? budget is 300$ without the amps

A distortion pedal I would recommend would be the Beta Aivin HM-200, available at SV Guitars / Standard Value. I paid $85 for it with year-long warranty, but from what I've heard, you can now get it for $55 with 1-week warranty as well. Awesome pedal for hard rock and heavy metal, and very versatile.

Perhaps source for a second-hand guitar for the remaining $200+? That amount can't get you much if you're looking at buying brand-new. If you want to buy brand new, $350 would be a safer bet because you should be able to get an LTD guitar which is very good for the money and suitable for rock and metal if you ask me.

What about a Squier Strat? Not the best, but an extrememly versatile guitar imo. That'll be around 300 though...

at the entry level it doesnt really make a difference. just do a physical check to make sure that it is built properly and does not have any physical damage.

since quality is not gonna vary so much, you would want to place some importance in looks and playability/comfort.
