Pearl Forum vs Yamaha Stage Custom Adv

Hi All I'm getting my first acoustic set. Had a e-kit before.

Can anyone help to advise which drumset would you consider to be the 'better' one?

'm looking at sound quality, durability, and future spare parts replacement and expansion?

Thanks!

one of the key things is what wood is used. personally, the sound of maple wood is best for me. you may use various types of snares like metal etc but maple wood sounds the best for the toms and kick. i think some of the stage customs are maple. if that's so, it is a better buy than the forum series.

it also depends on the purpose of it. if it's home use, i go for price. if it's live, then maple is a better bet. there are other brands that offer maple wood at affordable prices. pdp is one of them.

Yamaha Stage Custom as in the new ones made of Birch?

If yes, get those. Way better than the Forum. Yamaha's construction and hardware are superior as well.

If you're working on a tighter budget, check out the Buy/Sell. There are good deals to be had. Stagestar, Swingstar, Exports, etc. All decent home practice kits.

In fact, I'm selling off my Export, just haven't had time to snap pictures. All disassembled, cleaned and ready to go!

Hi trento. thanks for your advise thus far.

yamaha wise, it is a stage custom advantage nouveau. I think it uses those plastic nouveau lugs. Wood wise it is 8 ply mix of falkata, mahogany and outer layer birch. was looking at the natural wood finish but not sure whether if its popular at resale. I read somewhere that the parts replacement might be a hassle as its discontinued, and plastic lugs....

the forum i understood is all 6 ply poplar. there is a black finish that comes with black hoops (will the coating come off?) the mounts are ISS, not sure if the yamaha YESS mounts are any better...

hi jeepers. thanks for the advice.

i am following up with those wts drum kits. compared to paying 1k for brand new, how much should i be paying for 3 year old sets? there may be concerns for obsolete parts? and wear and tear?

I have PM'd you regarding your export.

No worries Harn. Didn't really help, anyway.

I can't really say how much you should pay. It depends on the condition and package. A 10 year old kit can look and function better than a 2 year kit if maintained properly.

Nah, obsolete parts will be the last of your worries mate. Won't be hard to find similar-fitting parts. Wear and tear? As long as you do regular maintenance, I don't foresee any problems.

I've heard great great things about the new Stage Custom Advantage. And you can't go wrong with YESS mounts. Very stable as well. In fact, I reckon more stable than the ISS on the Forum.

With regards to resale value, the finish should not be a major problem. Local buyers seem to be more interested in the selling price than anything else. Besides, the SCAN in Natural finish is lovely. I would go for it in Natural finish if I were you.

I'd bet good money that the SCAN will outplay the Forum any day - Tonally and structurally.

Only thing is that the Forum comes with stock cymbals (and a stock throne?), but the SCAN doesn't. BUT, those are stuff you'd upgrade first, together with the snare.

** I've not played the SCAN, but I'm basing my opinions on the fact that I own an Export (the new Forums are basically Exports), and all the great reviews I've read about the SCAN.

If you decide to get the Forum, you may as well go for an Export. Cheaper.

Jeepers, i've played a kit that says yamaha stage custom maple. as you said, current models are birch. has yamaha discontinued maple SC?

trento: As far as I know, Stage Customs never came in Maple. Are you sure yours says Stage Custom Maple? I'm guessing you saw wrongly and the kit you played was a Yamaha Maple Custom. Those are killer drums, can be used for anything.
