overdrive pedals

i'm looking for a overdrive pedal, definitely cant afford the modded tubescreamers, looking for something cheap.

To be used on a humbucking guitar, want to sound like pearl jam.

i'm actually eyeing on the Danelectro D2 fab overdrive, but i cant find it in Singapore, well so any other overdrive pedals i should look out for?

i haven't really heared pearl jam... so i can't recommend u pearl jam specific pedals...

i've tried the Bad Monkey before, however, and I must say it is a very impressive overdrive. It's also way cheaper than a Tubescreamer, and people seem to dig the fact you can boost/cut both bass and treble with the pedal, as opposed to a Tubescreamer with a tone knob.

i don't think it works out as a booster though. i couldn't get a single nice setting out of it as a booster, so i'm moving on to other booster type pedals.

I'm looking for a slight volume increase, and a setting which can enchance my main pedal (the Hyper Lead). Always preferably kick it to a tubey sound.

I actually thought the TS9DX stock did a better job in this case, but I had already sold it, and the TS9DX sounded too clean stock. Could/should have swapped the IC for one with more gain...

Currently thinking of getting a DS1. I had thought of not using a booster for a while, but it seems like I'm somewhat crippled by using only the guitar volume knob to swtich between rhythm/lead.

DS1 is a great boost ~!
especially for leads ...

some ppl prefer the SD1 as a booster,
but the stock sd1's volume doesnt work independent to the Drive.
ie. you gotta turn the gain up to get a higher volume ~

the DS1 with the dist at zero (vai setting)
and the volume up ... it's just lovely ...~!
:)

if I'm not wrong, Vai's is Keeley-modded.

Thor, you can try the TS-7. I owned it for a while. I find that it gives a very transparent boost. It ups the volume and the fatness(but not too much, so your guitar won't lose its character). It's more transparent than the bad monkey and the sd-1.

and it's cheap yea.

Does the TS7 suck tone ?
i've never test it before,
but heard that most of the tonelok series suck alot of tone.
:)

I've the D-2 Fab Overdrive pedal and I think its a fantastic overdrive boost. And its not as expensive as other boutique pedals too. Adds cutting sustain to your overdriven amp. I think its underratted though.

I'm currently hunting for the Digitech Bad Monkey overdrive too. Heard many many raving reviews about it..

thor666,

For a transparent boost, I recommend the Boss OD3. The amount of boosting db is much higher than a tubescreamer's. And as for sound quality, the OD3 is actually clearer than Edwin's modded TS7 and stock TS9. They are muddy in comparison but with tt distinct midrange hump. However the TS808RI boost is very sweet esp with a Strat, even more than a OD3 IMO. But consider the price difference.

Consider the MXR Microamp too, it's transparent compared to the above pedals.

I also recommend experimenting with the booster in the effects loop. I was able to get some really nice sounds at acceptable volume levels compared to using it in front of the amp.

This transparent boosting sound trend is something the boutique manufacturers have been using for years to leverage against traditional TSs and mass producers. It seems now they have caught up with the OD3 and BM!

transparent boost i hear?

been hearing many good things about keeley's Katana boost pedal.
G77 bringing in ....might try it when it comes in... havent been there for months.

I've heard very good things about Analogman. The Maxon OD9 is just about the best anyone can get from the tubescreamer series (The OD9 is a more faithful TS than its Ibanez counterpart, including the TS808 reissue). The Silver Mod from Analogman has better clarity, bottom end. It's top on my list. Analogman is also very fast on email replies and scores very high on my list. I emailed both AM and Robert Keeley at the same time. AM has replied me a few times while Keeley none.

Sounds good. I've heard that Beez might be working at G77.

ic .. thanks for the link, but as i said i cant afford those tubescreamers.. :(

actually, i want to use the overdrive pedal more for overdriving than boosting.

can somebody with the bad monkey send me some recorded samples? would be greatly appreciated.

hehe... thanks guys for the suggestions... though hifi_killer is the one looking for OD!! sorry about that hifi...

i won't really go for the keeley or analogman... strangely some of their soundclips do not impress me that much. (some are awesome however) Their price tend to be hefty..

i think i'll try a DS1, then a MXR Microamp first. The OD3 doesn't seem to justify the price tag if i'm not using what it's made for... an overdrive.... heh..

what kind of amp you are using?

i use a vantage 12w amp. but i heard the bad monkey have an output hole specially for by passing the amp, straight into the recording source, so u dont need amp?
