Overdrive and Distortion?

simply,
overdrive- soft clipping of signal
distortion- harsher clipping of signal

you can use the search function next time yeah.

All this came about during the blues era (maybe earlier O_o) and tube amps...

Performers jacked up the volume levels on the output stage and over-drove (hence the term) the vacuum tube amplifiers till they clipped the sine-wave signal..

"Distortion" is a highly saturated soft-clipping version of an overdriven signal. And modern pedals mimmick that digitally, so that you don't have to blast a 100W tube amp just to get the clipping (and some comlaints no doubt).

-Edit-
Them links are very informative... nice find!

some players tend to dismiss one to embrace the other. i'd urge you to try what's best for you.

i used to be dismissive of overdrive/ fuzz initiall but i enjoy having them in the mix these days.

Good to have a mix when you want more of the original tone coming out of the amp at one point in time and a sudden blast of crunch in another part of the song.
