ALTERNATION (Thurs 25 Oct): OSSUARY and FLYBAR
Come and catch Singaporean metal legends Ossuary and rock powerhouse Flybar perform at Alternation!
Ossuary
Ossuary, which was formed in late 1990, was a prolific Singapore metal outfit througout the 90s.
The year 1997 saw Ossuary writing new songs and performing at gigs. In June 1997, Ossuary were ‘discovered’ by an inependent label called Snakeweed and was offered to record and album. The band hit the studio to start recording in July and the whole session ended by January 1998. In February 1998, the album ‘Ossuary’ was released in Singapore and Malaysia with positive reviews and reactions not only within the region but as far away as the United Kingdom, Canada and some parts of Eurore as well. For the rest of 98, Ossuary continued to perform gigs and in June 99, made their first trip to Malaysia to showcase their music there.
The band continued to perform gigs but in July 2000, Ossuary decided to depart with Joe. This led to Jali joining Ossuary on board as the new bass player, an admission which gives a vital push for the band. This line up continue to play various shows locally and also in Malaysia, gaining a strong momentum of exposure especially in the Malaysian scene. However, the band took a significant break from the scene since the end of 2000. Hence, Ossuary has remained largely inactive for the early part of the new millenium, except for a few smatterings of local shows. Following this period of inactivity however, year 2007 sees the band once again practicing and begining to write new material with new bass player Nazar(Bayarearockblasta). The band also proceeded to play new shows with this line up. And with this renewed vigour, Ossuary will once again pick up where they left off and carry on with the musical quest they began embarking years ago.
Flybar
Every once in a while comes a band that challenges the mindset of what can be incorporated into a familiar style of music. Flybar takes pride in the fact that although their music has the general radio audience in mind, the songs also seamlessly incorporates hints of many other elements that is not usually associated with rock music: harmonica, electronic beats, saxophone solos and much more.
In recent times, the band have ventured into a full album effort at Snakeweed Acoustic Labs with Leonard Soosay, a recognized authority for all things regarding the recording and development of bands. Combined with the mastering expertise of well- known engineer Stephen Marcussen, the tracks have turned quite a number of heads among people who are actively involved in the development of Singapore’s unique musical landscape.
Shows that Flybar have participated in include the opening ceremony for the much talked about Buangkok MRT station, opening for South East Asian favourites Rivermaya and also international superstars Jet, and even an internationally broadcasted show, the World Battle of the Bands International Finals 2006 which was transmitted live internationally via QQ.com and also supported by Channel V.
Flybar's debut single is expected on airwaves soon, while the album is scheduled for a January 2008 release.
Also featuring the resident DJs of Alternation, DJ Mentor aka X'Ho and Saito Nagasaki.
Tickets are sold at $12 for the public and $6 for all NEBO members. Club rules apply.
