Ordering of effects chain on pedal board for christian worship and order explanation

Just to share how i approach ordering of effects in a signal chain for my own worship tone.

Guitar in->SP compressor->Keeley Java Boost->Full Tone OCD V4->Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive-> Ts808 reissue->Ts9 Keeley Mod->BB preamp plus-> Artec Volume pedal-> EP booster v2-> Strymon Timeline ->Amplifier Out

1. SP compressor- has incredible tone sustain when playing chords and doing solos. Punchy feel to it. This pedal is good for funk single note rhythms. It destroys dynamics in some way. It allows your highs to be brought down and lows to be brought up. Balanced compressed sound. This pedal shapes your tone immediately when using clean (dry)

2. Keeley java boost- to crank up a drive pedal or an overdriven amp so that tone can cut through the mix when doing a solo. Basically is a treble booster.

3. Full tone -> sparkle -> ts808 -> keeley mod ts9 -> bb preamp- i stack my drives with different combinations to allow obtain various overdriven tones with rich harmonics. Drive knobs all set to 10 o'clock. This is to reduce mud in tone when combining them. For instance, running 2 overdrives or 3 overdrives at the same time. Feel free to combine different overdrive pedals when you stack them together. Warning:High gains on each pedal will create a lot of muddy tone when stacking them. The more drive pedals you stack, you get richer harmonics in tone. Good to build up dynamics in a song when going from verse to chorus to bridge etc.

4. Artez volume pedal- for volume swirls to create synth like sounds. This pedal has an external gain control so it gives you full control to your overall volume

5. EP booster V2- To have an overall volume boost, cut through the mix, have a more punchy tone. I prefer to place this towards the end of the signal chain.

6. Strymon timeline- This pedal has many delay types and can function as a subtle modulation pedal as well. Delay pedals come after the volume pedal to allow long sustains when doing swirls. I personally use this to get synth sounds using ice mode.

7. Polytune mini- I connect the fixed gain output to my tuner pedal and leave my tuner on all the time. This allows you to tune and monitor your guitar strings at any point in time instead of cutting the signal to tune. I usually step back the volume pedal when i tune.

Feel free to share your pedal combinations of your board. :)

Sweet =) do u recommend reverbs for church set-ups??? and what amps are u using??? =)

Nope I don't use reverb.. I plug this into a fender blues junior 3. It has reverb on the amp itself but don't quite use it .

As for church setups , experimenting with delay mixes and feedbacks would fatten up the tone in worship . I'm not a firm believer of reverb.i usually like 30% feedback and mix for fattening up chord rhythm works.

I have a few questions for you!

1. Do you use your Java Boost only to put more gain/dirt into your drive pedals? Or do you use it as a clean boost as well?

2. I see you have 5 different levels of drives. Do they overlap at all? Seems a little excessive to me, but if it works for you then i guess that's fine!

3. What are the differences of putting a tuner at the end of the chain as compared to the front?

4. Do you use modulation pedals? If so, which ones do you think are important?

Thanks bro, and nice set up you have there!

Hi daryl to answer some questions

1. Java boost is not a clean booster but more of a treble booster. Is useful when amps or drive pedals are already cranked up. Activating the java boost in front of these pedals would have a nice treble boost allowing your overdriven tone to jump out of the mix better. For a nice clean boost, the EP booster does the job well. I would recommend the RC booster too. Thats what i feel but is personal preference.

2. I have 5 different level of drives but at most i would only activate 2 or 3 at a time. sometimes even 1 at a time. Is really about mixing and matching which overdrives mix with another would get the desired tone you want. Personally i like mixing the sparkle drive and the ts9 keeley mod together. and OCD and ts808 together. when doing a lead solo. i would have 3 drives turned on. for example, OCD->sparkle drive->Ts9 keeley mod. activating the java booster before all these would give a better cut through the mix depending on live situation. I'm letting go of the BB preamp plus as it is underutilized. so mainly i mix combinations of 4 different drive pedals

3. I'm not putting my tuner at the end of the chain. My tuner input is directly connected to my fixed gain output of my volume pedal. This allows to be play live and to be able to monitor my string tuning at any point in time.Hence my tuner pedal is turned on all the time. When i need to tune i would roll the volume pedal back so that other musicans cant hear me. Tuner can be placed at anywhere in the signal chain. is a personal preference.

4.Modulation pedals i feel that some of the best ones are empress tremelo but is darn ex. Chorus pedals i like the liquid chorus by visual sound, voodoo lab tremlo. I hardly use them these days. Strymon Timeline is a delay pedal as well but it acts like a subtle modulation pedal. You can achieve synth type sounds using ice modes and it does have tremelo delay also. To me this was the substitue for all delay and modulation pedals, hence i sold off all my modulation pedals.

hope that answers your questions :)

Share your boards set ups pls!
