Open Tunings on a Classical Guitar ?

Hi, I've been playing on Standard Tuning (EADGBE) for about 4months (on and off).

The last pair of string I tried to tune to Open C or something (see from some free online lesson). Wasn't really successful.

Is it because nylon strings once tuned up, cannot tune down ?
Are steel string (acoustic or electric), better for experimenting with various Tunings ?

people very seldom tune all the way down to C on a classical... u just get loose strings ringing on the fretboard... usually done on an electric... i dun like playing so low a tuning though... makes the guitar super loose and irritating to play

buy super high gauge for this kinda tuning... but problem is ur guitar must be liddat till u change the string...

if u try to tune up... lol gg to ur bridge... hope ur guitar is not made in china.

DADGBE is popular ... just go easy when u tune low.
Btw even a low E tuning at times gives a nice vibe ...try browse tunes in differant tuning and play em ...maybe you will pick up the tricks.

oh yeah. listen to ur average "heavy metal" bands nowadays and u find some of them tuning down to even B... however, with the correct picking techniques, u may actually pull it off

i think the best "lowest" tuning to go on a classical would be a Drop D!

Any lower would sound weird or awkward to play cos of the string tension!

as for me i usualy go to 1/2 step down A.K.A Eb or 1 step down A.K.A Drop D!

this is of course my .2c worth!

try and experiment around and you'll ur spices!

Cheers!

ps: nylon strings can take much, much MUCH more abuse den steel strings! ive personally experienced dat adn definately last longer too!

dat said so, u can tune up and down many times! if u find difficulty, prolly could be the string brand! i've always used Yamaha or Aquilla <<(Mostly actually)

Aquilla i think (if im not wrong and can still remember) is from Italy!
Available at Davis Guitar!
