I have just bught a Washburn electric guitar and a peavey practice amp but I can't get that big distortion sound from the two together. what do I need to add in between? Help!!
I'm a geriatric and don't understand all this stuff but have been playing guitar for 47 years - just not the electric version...

Hi brother,

If you’ve started playing it at the age of 12 and having been at it for 47 years; you must be quite a SCARY player by now.

My dob being 26-Oct-56, I thought that I am that “apek” and “kong-kong” of a guitar-player herein; but ... .. . hhmmm . .. ...

From one who’s not quite but near enough andropause to a “geriatric”; I am saying that “sound” is so ... .. . (we can do away with the expletives!)... .. . subjective. So just let your seasoned pair of ears decide and tell what your “big distortion sound” is.

Go to any guitar shop who sells amps, stomp boxes, sound processors etc and ask them to help. At your age you should easily be able to “buy/afford” the sound your ears wished for; and more ... .. .

... .. . don't worry - be happy.

Mind posting up the exact model of your amplifier? I have a hunch it's because you've got a tiny amp with titchy speakers.

Assuming your amp is 20watts and below you can try

volume at 9 o clock(depends on your preference, only that small amps, i feel go beyond 12 o clock start to be crappy).

Gain at 1 o clock or less

Bass 2 o clock

Mid between 12 to 1 o clock

Treble 11 o clock

Try to tweak it and most prob you will get the right sound. I`ve seen lots players getting best sound from all range of amps, perhaps once you play around with the amp more then you can get a pedal.

to get BIG distortion, you need BIG amps! the bigger the better! ok im kidding.

i assume you're no getting much distortion from your amp. i guess if you want some recommendation you can start by telling us:

- some guitarists/bands you're influenced by
- if you plan on getting distortion from an amp or a pedal
- your budget, but then i guess you should be able to afford most.
- also tell us more about what you already have. what kinda washburn guitar, amp of what model.

we hope to help you, but tell us more.

EDIT: oops didnt realise this thread is old. hahahahahaahahahha
