hi guys,

im thinking of starting guitar. no musical training at all before. how should i go about starting? for a start, what guitar should i get? i dont want to get a guitar that's too expensive in case i lose interest, but i dont want to get one that's too cheap and lousy and affects my learning.

get a good acoustic and buy a chord book and song book, that's how i learned to play.

BTW i'm selling my Yamaha acoustic with gigbag for 200 hehe FS720S very good and low action for you

Well you can bring a fellow guitarist who's more experienced to help you.
Or, look out for these:
Whether the action is to your liking
Whether the neck is to your liking
Whether you feel comfortable with the guitar
Whether there are dings or anything, especially if it's secondhand
Also, for acoustic, a solid top is better. Laminate back and sides. Easy to maintain yet sounds good.

Get a guitar that:
- Is comfortable.
- Stays in tune.
- Sounds nice to your ears.

Means, you have to test the guitars yourself. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating". Remember that. I'd recommend you visit Ranking Sports and Music. It is opposite Swee Lee at Bras Basah Complex. They have some really affordable guitars there, by brands like Jack and Danny, Walden, etc. A safe bet would be between $200-300. That budget is quite likely to get you a decent guitar at least.

Which is why I said, "The proof of the pudding is in the eating". Testing a guitar in person is more of a rule than anything else in my book.

.

If I may, i'd like to add a tip...
when you playing an acoustic, youre hugging the acoustic guitar, and the vibes resonate through your body, bones etc.
It may sound good or bad according to your preference.

So. when you've made your choice, let someone play it, stand back and listen. You may be surprised that it doesnt sound the same.

Hope it make sense.

Davis Guitar offers cheap acoustic and electric guitar for the beginner guitarist to get started. You can get an amp, strat style electric guitar, cable and pick for under $300. Their site, http://www.davisguitar.com/ doesn't features the beginner's stuff. Head on down to the shop at basement of peninsula hotel to try them out.

Couldn't find what you are looking for? Head on down to Standard Value located just round the corner of Davis! The prices are slightly higher but they are of higher quality and provide excellent service. The extra help provided definitely helps beginners to make well informed decisions and purchases. http://www.standardvalue.com.sg/

And no, I am not affiliated to these 2 shops in anyway, neither do I get paid for referrals. I'm just stating the places beginners should go to get their stuff.

LTD and BC Rich are not the only brands Davis brings in. Have you seen the Suzuki guitars there?

BTW, Standard Value is in Woodlands. The Standard Value branch at Peninsula basement is called SV Guitars. Different name, but they're of the same.

country of origin & quality control association is inevitable. to many of us, American = Superb, Non-American = Dud. this is subjective & convenient association when it comes to quality assessment. some searching would reveal atritious American guitars despite its preferred brand name (specific mention unnecessary) while some elusive, sub-$300 units would impress you in this department.

Lemonade93, arh...no. I'm afraid I don't get your question to me. In my opinion, LTD, BC Rich, Schecter, whatever other brands whether cheap or expensive, as long as it sounds good, feels good in your hands, it's a good guitar. One shouldn't bother too much with brands as a basis for choosing a guitar to buy.

EugeneSmasher, yup you are right. I correct my post to SV Guitars. Sorry, my bad...

To reillustrate my point, my original post was meant for Calpis who is facing difficulties in choosing a guitar as he is beginner. Therefore I mentioned Davis and SV Guitars as I believe the gears and service there are good for beginners to start with.

then why classify SV cheaper guitars to be better in quality :).

I've tried guitars from both and i feel that they are EQUALLY of good Quality Control, dont see why you came to a conclusion the SV sells better quality instruments therefor stereotyping LTD guitars as low quality or not as high as 'Copy guitars from SV'

poor QC isn't brand exclusive. as far as LTDs go, i've never come across a bad unit. they are fine guitars to start with. some of us find the default hardware/ features unagreeable but that doesn't equal bad offerings to begin with. we must keep in mind the tier in which these guitars are from & the implications pertaining to production.

Hi calpis

I've been playing guitar for 11yrs but Im not a pro of course. This is just my opinion and how I started.

1) You don't want too expensive guitar in case you lose interest: If you don't mind just get a guitar cost below $100 which can be found in normal bookshop or other music instrument store. (Keep in mind, the sound quality will not be as good but you still can learn how to play guitar.)

2) How should you go about starting?: Learn how to tune the guitar. You can get a guitar tuner from the shop or learn how to tune the guitar by ears. Maybe this might help (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeIIee_oK7o&feature=related)

Then learn some basic chords from . A to G. which can be found in youtube too.

Lastly find the chords of your favorite and simple song and practice.

This is the cheapest way to learn and if you won't waste too much money if you lose interest. If you start to love it and have money to spare, get yourself a better quality guitar.
