New To Music & Bass

Hi XPB,

It is always good to start learning the bass with proper bass technique, ie proper left and right hand playing positions, steady tempo, etc.

Learning from a guitarist may not lay your foundations right and if you really intend to move on further in bass playing, do consider and budget getting proper bass lessons.

Cheers! :)

or maybe just listen to songs and try to play them... just feel the beat and follow the rythm=)

i've been studying how to play the bass on my own and so far i can play lotsa songs including matellica(master of puppets), muse(hysteria) and more only i forgot the names haha...

so my point is just learn how to read tabs from your friend who play guitar and then study and play the music. also in order to actually play better in a band, learn what notes are on the fretboard, it really helps=)

I think this post from Talkbass more or less sums it up:

The cons of being self-taught:

* You can develop bad habits you don't even know are wrong, leading to problems in the future. (Improper right/left hand technique, etc.)
* Books and videos don't talk back, giving you the feedback you need to become a better player. A teacher can evaluate you and tell you what you need to work on.
* Teachers have real world experience and lessons that can apply to you in ways no book can.

The cons of getting a teacher:

i do agree but for someone like me who'se family ain't much of a supporter, i think its fairly good that i got this far haha=)

yeah same here :)

my first bass was a second hand Japanese bass that is super bowed, super high action lol I bought it for 80 bucks from my cousin. I saved a years worth of allowance to buy it then I used our old karaoke machine as amp lol. the tone sucks a lot but that where I learned the basics of bass...

www.activebass.com was the first website that taught me the basics to play.

we all have to start somewhere...
