new song by Riki Hendrix & SG players

Wow bro, nice song. Good guitar playing too. In the middle of the song, the music suddenly stopped. I think there is an error in recording. :D

Hiya people,

Riki Hendrix (Jimi's cousin) was here again in Singapore recently. He recorded a track called ROCKIN ROLLIN SINGAOPRE with some of Singapore's baddest dudes. This is a raw mix - the final cut will be mastered and remixed in USA before release on Riki's upcoming new album...

So here's a little sneak preview for you...

RIKI HENDRIX GUITAR, VOCALS, DRUM PROGRAMING & KEYS
FARID LONG GUITAR & VOCALS
BILLY DAS GUITAR
SMOKEY KELVIN TAN HARMONICA
DAN"THE MAN" GANA SAXAPHONE
MARK MAGENDRAN BACKGROUND VOCALS
AZIZ "ZIZ" BASS

All music & words by Riki Hendrix, copyright Riki Hendrix Music 2006.

Hope you like it!

Regards
Farid Long

ha..ha... SOFT has been stalking .. :smt025

wah paing, STALKED yet again.... BTW what do U think of the track? Real quicko 5 hrs recording / 1 hour rough mix ....need work before final mastering though...

ha...ha.. no lah. i had coffee with riki and he was telling me about this recording.

overall, song melody is a bit not catchy. quite a lot of tracks had timing problem but can be fix by shifting in the DAW. some of the backing vocal pitching a little out but also can be fixed using auto-tune.

i would consider this a sketchpad track lah. the idea is there, just need to polish it up.

is Dan = Peninsular Dan?

* hey, let's write more songs with 'singapore' in it. 8)

woah nice one man :D very rough though wonder how it sounds after its mastered!

yeah I norm take 10 -12 hrs to do a proper mix...still considering the time constrait nottoo bad la...

Hi man!Dey I downloaded your song, i don't know if you want my honest opinion, but this is what i feel la, I felt that number 1, the programmed drums kinda killed the overall feel of the song, the guitars were great, the tone was kinda weird for some of the fill-ins(must be due to improper equipment for recording), the bass was consistent(did not really pay attention to it), the harp and sax was a nice touch, hahah, the singing....No offence bro, but maybe after mastering it should sound ok, but I felt that that wasnt the best take on singing, especially for a song thats gonna be on an album, maybe, you guys should have spent more time recording lah, to fintetune the arrangement..must wave the flag of singapore properly you know!!!Hmm, I also thought that there were too many guitar parts(maybe cos there were 3 guitarists)..

the positive thing though is that the song sounds more like a jam, as in very open sounding, there is a lot of feel..... maybe with real drums, you could do a Live Band recording to capture the vintage feel, cos now it sounds kinda sterile(due to multitracking i guess)..

Riki on keyboards?Nice.

I think the song has potential if its recorded properly, and I have to disagree with some of you folks, cos I thought that it was quite catchy, maybe its because I'm more rock orientated...Its a raw diamond la bro, gotta polish the bugger...and NO DRINKING ON THE SET! :D

just my 2 cents, good first step..

PS, could I jam with Riki one day?HAHA

yo bro snuffles..

thanx 4 the honest imput

yeah this is basically a raw demo.... due to time / studio / engineer constraits etc and the fact Riki wrote the song in like 2 hours & we practcally never rehearsed it - it was an "ok" effort - of course parts will need to be repolished, re-edited & rerecordedbefore final mastering.

From what I gather from Riki, he'll be back to SG where he lpans to work with more SG musicians including some local compositions etc... followed by a regional tour....should be a blast man

I see, if its all written in 2 hours , then I must say that it really is a good effort..

the spine of the song is more or less down, now all you gotta do is fill up the body with the right parts if u noe what i mean...

so let me know if you need a spare guitarist or drummer aite?

cheers! :D

Farid,

Yeah the drums dont help the song....not the programming per se but the samples you used give it a really dated sound and you can tell for sure that the drums are programmed just by the sounds. There is some weird timing thing on the kick for me too.

The song needs an outside set of ears, production for want of a better word, to come in and tidy up the arrangement, get the sounds right and give the song a bit more focus.

Mastering won't fix mix issues and it sounds like whoever did this mix has attempted to master a bit as well by strapping an L1/L2 across the master buss to bring the overall volume of the mix up which has mushed up the mid range. The mix is definitely a more is more kind of mix with everyone fighting for a space. I would simplify it a bit but thats just me.

My main criticism of the song, mix aside because that can be fixed mostly, is the lyrical content. 'Rockin Rollin Singapore'?....really?..not a bit cheesy?...it is for me, sorry! And a song by Riki Hendrix where he actually sings his name in the lyrics? ...again, really?

I know there are some strong egos on this track..they literally jump out at you as they fight for space in the mix. To me the song is just the seed of an idea, or a jam, that needs some strong production before it becomes a song worthy of being on an album. And it needs to be produced by someone other than Riki or anyone that is on the actual recording. That comment holds true for a lot of local material. Self production, even when done by some of the greatest musicians of our time, doesnt work very often. To me, bands like Electrico make better records with Leonard at the helm than they would if it was self produced while bands like Lunarin, whilst having some great ideas and sounds, never really consolidate those ideas to realise their potential by self producing their album.

Ahhhh crap.....what do I know?!...bugger all...just my 2 cents is all.

I did like the guitar playing on the track though ;) ...a lot!
