MEGADETH - "What The Hell Does The Band Name Mean?"
[The latest interview of Dave Mustaine at "Brave Worlds & Bloody Knuckles.com"]
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine spoke to BW&BK earlier today regarding the recently "leaked" news that Toronto-based Glen Drover (EIDOLON/DIMENSION INFINITE/ex-KING DIAMOND) is the band's new guitar player. BW&BK first reported the news in July that ANNIHILATOR leader Jeff Waters was in the running for the position. But with the tour in support of their upcoming album, The System Has Failed (out September 14th through Sanctuary), looming over his head, Mustaine decided to snap up another Canuck axeman.
Mustaine explains his final decision: "Jeff Waters and I had talked twice over my career about playing together, but I thought it would be better to start fresh with something new even if it's a side project, which I think would be fun. I don't know if it would be good for me or for him to be in Megadeth because I need to be back on my feet in order to contribute to a project. If not, I'm leaning on somebody else and I don't want to do that. I want to make sure I'm strong again before I go and do something with somebody else. It doesn't look like I'm a parasite feeding off of them. So, I wanted to make sure I was healthy that way, had a good record out, so on and so forth. And it just kept coming up to me that you know, 'Hey, the thing with Jeff is probably going to be a waste for him to go out and do the Megadeth thing.' I want to keep that option open and fresh 'cause I think he's a great guitar player. He also had a lot of previous things that he needed to get confirmed from me and I just couldn't confirm anything because it was just so up in the air. I'm still up in the air with so much stuff. And I wanted to respect his business. It was basically, 'I can't confirm anything right now, so go off and our paths will cross again soon I know it.'
"I talked to Dave McRobb, who's the webmaster of the Megadeth website, who's another Canadian man and a good friend and I said I needed to look for somebody else. And he said, 'Why don't you check out this guy (Glen Drover)?' And I said, 'What the hell does the band name mean?' And he said, 'I talked to the guy, I know what you're looking for and he seems like the guy.' So I said 'Check him out a little bit more.' You know this compatriotism with the guys being both Canadian, it's easier to talk to than people trying to communicate between different countries. So I figured he would make an easier connection right off the bat. Then Dave sent me some of Glenn's music and I heard it and it was good. It was exciting.
When I listened to Al (Pitrelli - former Megadeth guitarist), he was good too, but along with Al came Al. And coming from that Savatage camp, image wasn't really important to any of them, except Chris Caffery (guitarist), who's a really cool kid too. So, I looked at Glenn, watched his videos and I said, 'This guy can play.' He sings and he's a good looking guy. So then I said, 'Let's talk.' So I talked to him and everything just started to fall together.
And then he started to prove his work ethic. And I'm goin', 'This is a guy that I could go forward with after Megadeth II possibly. And I'm thinking, 'Well he's got his brother (Shawn Drover - Eidolon drummer) and I don't want to hurt his brother.' But everything was starting to become much more positive. At that point I said, 'Send me some more stuff down and I'll let you know my answer.' It was a big decision for me. Not only is it going to be detrimental to me if I make the wrong decision, it's gonna be apparent to whoever else is playing, because the fans will let him know. Megadeth fans, as you know, let people know when they're not happy. They know they can tell me about it if they're not happy and they know I'll listen to them. I won't always agree with them, but I will respect their opinion. Then I called him up and just said 'You're in.'"
And of course Drover was over-the-top with Mustaine's decision, but had two questions.
"He was really excited. Then he goes, 'How do you feel about me playing Jacksons?' And I said, 'How do you feel about playing ESPs?' And called up ESP and said 'Give this guy some guitars.' And now he's got ESPs. And he says, 'Well, I've got these type of amps' and I said 'OK, we'll get some Marshalls.'"
And to set up Drover comfortably equipment-wise, Mustaine says that "It's a desire to have him be happy with me, so that when we're on stage playing together, he's going to have fun and that will translate to the audience. And also, so that this last go around, I've brought in guys (including returning drummer Nick Menza and a soon-to-be-named bassist) that are going to give it their all, so that there will be a fitting funeral and this will be more like a wake. I'm gonna go on my own after this. I need to do that. There's just too much legal stuff going on. Chris Poland's manager and attorney are going after me now. That was whacked. The whole process of having him in the studio (the original Megadeth guitarist put down most of the leads on System...), now has a black mark on it. And the thing with Ellefson - I can't tell you how many people have called me up saying, 'We're praying for you Dave, we're supporting you Dave. We always thought he was the nice guy.' I'm still very grateful for what he did for my career. I don't want to hurt him. But the truth is going to come out to."
