To many of us, this is worth the half decade's wait, the primary reason being- it's NEVERMORE. The expectations are clear; heavy music with lots of commanding guitar work & these are all present with clarity to boot. The statement of intent could be heard in the album's opening number The Termination Proclamation which arguably defines Nevermore's peerless status. The highlight in The Obsidian Conspiracy, in addition to Mr. Loomis' intricate finger gymnastics, is also Warrel Dane's vocal force, having manifested some creative personalities in his solo outing, the benefits of returning to the band afresh couldn't be more forefront. Nevermore is as heavy metal as it gets devoid of today's sell-out ingredient. No huge surprises here, it's the Nevermore as before with necessary progression.
