So far ive been using my friend's bass to practice so im thinking of getting my own. Ive juz started playing and im wondering if anyone could recommend me any good bass within the $1k-1.5k range. I play k-pop, j-pop, and pop songs~ i also play english indie rock songs by bands like muse, bon jovi etc etc. Since im not really sure on what kind of models and brands of bass i was hoping if anyone could recommend me some and where im able to find it

I was also thinking if it would be wise to get a 5 string bass coz my fren said i have huge hands and i would be more suited to play it. But i only have 1-2months bass experience of playing tabs and learning by books and was wondering if i shld start off with the norm 4 string bass or listen to my frenz advice and juz get the 5 strings~

Plz help a newbie bassist =D

if you arent buying another bass in short term, it would be wise to invest in a 5-string bass for a start. yes the extra low-b string would be distracting, but you can easily get used to it by playing it more often. i've gotten used to mine in about 2weeks by playing everyday when i've gotten my 5-string as my 2nd bass.

also, with the low-b string it's infact easier to play bass riffs as the finger pattern can be used across the strings.

i'm an ibanez fan, so i recommend the SR500, or 505 if you want the 5 string. price is around 1k+.

as for 5 strings or not... it's really up to your choice of music. if you don need the low b, then no point getting 5 string also. changing strings for 5 string basses are damn ex i tell u haha.

a set of 5-string long scale strings is within $25, so it's not that expensive in my opinion.

haha oops... tbh i have not changed my 5 strings for... many many months haha. it's on loan to a friend actually. but I remembered my Warwick SS were around $50 i think. what brand are those under $25?

Go watch mtv, for some reason almost every band's bassist is using either a fender p or fender jazz 4 string bass. Except for heavy metal of course. That must say something, me im hoping to get one soon as well.

Depending on your genre...

Once you hit the R&B/Hip-hop/Soul groups the basses change. Callowhill, Sadowsky, MTD, et al.

I'm not usually a fan of Gibsons/Epiphones, but the new Epiphone Tbird Pro series look pretty good.

if you pop, you'll need the G string.

with low B string, it's more likely to be used if you keep the same fingering pattern for base lines.

if you do solo-ing, the G string (or even 6-string) would likely be needed.

i dont play the bass but i've heard quite alot from my friends who do or even reviews and other forum bout fenders precision and gib's thunderbird, well i hope it helps no harm checking em out :)

goodday..ive been playing bass for 15 years now..and indeed played on different genres of music from metal to jazz..if youre going to play a wide variety of music ,you need to have and learn a 5 string bass.low ends and notes on the B string really helps especially when your playing RNB and love songs...but make sure that your bass is a good one...a mid priced bass which cost 600USD is or would be enough (for me though) ....you have to take in consideration the sound, action, and comfort when you pick a bass...hope this helps you...More power!!!!:)

Not sure if you have purchase your bass guitar. If you don't mind 2nd hands, a good place to take a look will be Blackwood at Bras Basah Complex, just opposite Swee Lee.

They sell pretty good 2nd hands, those which usually cost a lot more if you buy them new. Fender is good.
