Some question to ask about sweep picking ,

It been 3 month i was learning sweep picking . I can syncronize both hands but the main thing that really make me mad is when the pick love to get stuck . I can't get the smooth and clean or accurate tone . Anyone could help ? Or isit there's like a specific pick we have to use for sweep picking .

Anyone can also give me a good video for economy picking ?

Thanks .
Since exam had finish i going to learn lot of guitar technique !

try losing up on your right hand, dont hold the pick to firmly, let it lose, ur pick must rest on each string before it sweeps down. practise (:

sorry to hijack, but, i also accounted a problem with sweep picking.
my left hand have no problem shifting notes,
and right hand have no problem with sweeping up and down.
but the thing is that, my right hand is always slower than the speed my left hand move.

like its not synchronize. anything that can help me in this? tried practicing sweeping slowly.
but it do not work. seem to be really bored when i do it slowly.

for me i feel that holding it firm isnt a problem the more important factor for me would be the angle of the pick...
and erm how i got to get my sweeping decent is by

1.do it slow
2.add in one note by one note of the arppegios in until it's clear
3.do it with more pick attack <-- for me it some how helps sync-ing my picking hand and my fretting hand :)

anw pick wise try not to use something too soft or bendable personally i feel the harder the better
hope this helps

yea i know, it depends on the person but for more smooth flow would be easier with not-so firm grip on the pick. it will make it quite stiff and u will tend to pick instead of sweeping down. maybe that method would be for someone that able to sweep pick already

Dudes, gotta start really slow man.
All techniques requires u to play slow then slowly up the tempo.
Try prac with a metronome if u can.

A trick here is to tilt ur pick to a certain angle, like slanted like that. Then u slowly sweep down and up.
Rem to coordinate both hands same timing and slowly.

All the best!

Cheers! Peace :)

i really don't know how to use a metronome and yar i use a dunlop usa jazz pick 3 . How long does it take for you guys to do sweep picking .

Hmm.. in that case, just start really slow. Doesn't matter if it feels boring. The main thing is to get note for note. There's really no shortcut to learning pick sweeping. I took mths to perfect it too.. But once u get it, any type of picks work. So just keep prac. Rem, speed is not the key. It must sound gd.

Cheers! Peace :)

Haha.. Yup, literally mths to perfect it. Well, everyone had to start somewhere.

Maybe if u're really talented, u can defintely nail sweep picking faster!

All the best!

Cheers! Peace :)

waa months, i just started practicing sweep picking only a few weeks ago...

maybe his few months kinda standard is jason becker kinda standard :o

lol anw i feel that a metronome is not needed for this technique tho imo

honestly i started out sweeping by holding the pick lightly until someone pointed out to me that going hard would be real effective as, harder=more pick attk :) and you just need that when u sweep love it haha, secondly now that i think back when i held the pick at the start loosely it was quite unclean and all dirty and messy as your pick tends to go faster then what ur fretting

It took me literally months to get it right too :s but i am not anywhere near jason becker standard. I guess i am not that good?
Anyway, IMHO, the secret to sweeping is your right hand muting and both left and right hand coordination. Even tho at times it seems that you are coordinating properly, trust me, you are probably not. Practice makes perfect. Just keep practicing and you will get it one day. Alternate between minor and major positions.

ahh. sweep picking. im practising to make it perfect too. and the pick getting stuck is part and parcel of learning sweep picking. try to anticipate your next 2 note and always have the end note in mind. dont think about the next note, coz it should alr be in your muscle memory thats what a friend told me, i believe 40% is bullshit though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4X5L7mUPvg skip to like 2.00++ for the economy picking part. find that very useful too. all the best d00d

i would'nt say im good with sweep pickings but definately pick isn't a prob

Most important thing is u must be comfortable with ur pick.
angle ur pick properly around 45 degrees on contact with the strings (less friction)
and also dun let the tip of the pick dig in too much just let the tip hit the strings not the whole 1/3 of the pick.
loosen up like other softies said

yup GOOD LUCK on ur sweepy game

the standard to beat when it comes to sweep picking:

you can hold your pick lightly or otherwise while you sweep pick, it's not about the intensity of holding but how you pick & mute the notes that makes it work. you should be hearing the individual notes while you are at it. if you hear all the picked notes simultaneously, you are then strumming chords... may the force (or the lack of it) be with you...

When you encounter technical problems, you need to LOOK at what your hands are doing right & wrong. Watch your hand as you play the problem area wrongly so you have a better picture of what's going on.

In this scenario, it sounds like the pick is too big &/or it's dug too deep behind the string. Ever notice how tiny & slim jazz picks are?

Also, you wanna cut your teeth practising sweeps? Try working on Paganini's Capriccio No.1 & 5. Start slowly - ridiculously slowy, then slowly work your speed up with a metronome. MUST. USE. METRONOME. When you get bored, try modulating to other chords in other keys.
