hey guys, I've been mainly an acoustic player for 5 years till recently i've ventured into electric guitars. I kind of need help in what music i should listen to improve my playing sense, like what can i learn and copy from the bands. I'm interested in rock, blues, rock blues, maybe even pop. I love songs with nice riffs and stuff. Been wanting to learn them. Plus guitar solos! So can you guys enlighten me of which bands i should listen to? Very much appreciated! thanks

To be honest, you gotta give us a bit more detail on what kinda music you are listening to now. Cause rock itself has a lot of sub categories. Like wise blues itself.

In terms of solos, do you like soulful slow solos, or do you like hard and furious speed kinda solos?

For starters:
Blues: Jimi Hendrix, SRV, BB king, Eric clapton, Eric johnson

Virtuasols: Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve vai, Dream Theater (you did say band right?)

Jazz: Joe Pass, Al Di Meola, Chet Atkins

Hope this helps.

my friend recently introduced me to foo fighters. kind of like their latest album song rope and rosemary. Love U2! And have been listening to john mayer, but would kind of like to break out of him for now. Someting maybe about my music preference I do not like too much heavy stuff. Eg metal, very heavy rock.

solos preferably soulful solos! yeah.

perhaps maybe even telling me the song title itself!

Thanks for your input though, it helps. I'll check them out.

i find that the glam rock/metal era produced some of the most memorable and soulful solos, you may wanna check them out

Cool solo man LadyInTears.

I recommend some NOFX, Sum 41 and Rancid. The songs are fairly easy and the riffs are kind of catchy.

If you want to follow most guitarist, they start off with songs from GNR/Deep purple/ Metallica etc.

hey a simple but useful tip that has always worked for me
go wikipedia and find the artist that you're currently listening to and would like to explore his sound further
find his influences and go listen to them ^.^ and you'll notice that Jimi Hendrix is everywhere, everyone's influence haha

this can help you in exploring the genre further, though for exploring other genres this won't work haha

If you want your eyes and ears to melt, go dream theater, it made me think wtf was i doing with my guitar @@

If there is one band to listen to great guitarist.....i would recommend TS to listen to Ozzy Osbourne Band.
Coz through out the years, the band has many great guitarist. From Randy Rhoads to Jake E Lee to Zakk Wylde to Gus G.....not to mention Brad Gillis, Rudy Sarzo and others playing for a shorter time. So many variety of techniques from great guitarist in a band.

Having said that.....It has been 30 years 2 days ago since the passing of Randy Rhoads. R.I.P.!

Here's a funk-rock singer - Lenny Kravitz.
Check him out, esp. the albums 'love revolution', 5 & 'Lenny'.
His riffs are quite simple & solos are fundamentally basic so u dont need skills like Satriani.
The tabs can be found on 'ultimate guitar' website. Have fun.
