Need advice on frequency of lessons

Hi all,

Please don't feel obliged to answer this post if you think it's a dumb question. I know that ultimately, I have to make my own decision but just wanted to get some opinions on this.

Basically I just took up drums 6mths ago by taking private lessons from a school, once a week, 45mins. Owned a practice pad from the start and combined it with cushions, chairs and bed for practice. Just got a used kit very recently. I'm actually very slack about practicing on my own, probably do only 2 hours a week. I'm still interested, but I get bored easily (character flaw, wat to do?).

So was thinking of increasing frequency to at least twice a week. Not that it helps my attention span but I figured, at least that's 1 more hour a week that I'm getting serious stick work. Was thinking group lesson, cheaper.

Hmm...I welcome all comments, hopefully no nasty ones 8O

And are there any taking lessons more than once a week and how does that work for you?

Thanks a bunch, folks!!

Welcome to Soft.

It really up to you (your own personal time schedule currently) if you want to have more than the 45 minutes lessons really...because that also means you need more time to practice more stuffs from your instructor...I know cause I've been in that shoe before.

I was doing that till I had a Band, then 2 band, - wah no more time to practice.....I ask my Instructor - How do I schedule my time (because I only have one day to practice - NOT ENOUGH TIME).......now I have one band - got time to listen to songs, time to practice Rudiments, Groove, and more things in my drumming - and Most important - I'M NOT SO STRESSED afterall.....

It really up to you - you can do that for now till you think that - OK now I want to go back to once a week 1hr lesson....enough liao..always the case it happens.

Cheers !

I think increasing your lesson frequecy will be a waste of money. Generally students will need the week to pratice new lesson material. Practice intensity will increase with the increase in level of study. If you can only invest 2 hrs a week, I would suggest you do 15mins of focused practice a day (everyday). Do not spend the 2hrs on one day and do nothing for the rest of the week. You'll get no where and your instructor will not be able to help you much.

What you need to do if change your practice habit and not increase lesson intensity.

Good Luck!

arhh...ok.

Cos what I was thinking was that if the group lesson is the same pace as my individual lesson, then I can treat the group lesson as sort of a practice session. So in essence, I'd be covering the same thing in 2 lessons in 1 week.

But I get what you guys mean. Basically if I wanna progress, I ought to force myself to really sit down and practice regularly in between lessons ya?

*sucks in breath...and exhales*

o-k-a-y...will try...harder...

Thanks for the advice, very very much appreciated. :)

If you have Individual lessons (that's great bro)...but why go for group lesson again then..will defeat the whole thing or not - because learning in group I also ever did...really difficult lah- some students learn slower some faster, and many students there - want to ask instructor also paiseh - so some fall behind, some find teaching too slow one...could be not so motivating in time to come and it affect your learning you know.....no hard feeling har - it's really my own opinion and experience here...I saw somwe students holding sticks wrongly - but I guess because too many student - the Instructor cannot focus too much on small small thing - that is going to affect a student in a big way next time you know.

You wanna practice - can book a studio to practice drumming one - not expensive dont take up group and take that as practice for yourself - waste time waste $$$ really.

Happy Drumming

Cheers
