my view for a bassist

dun worry....

hahaa..its true many might think lowly about us bassist. Mainly because they don't know the full potential of what the bass can do. You go to anyone and ask if they know who victor wooten is. I doubt they will know. And for other musician like guitarist who thinks the bass i snothing special, they don't know how much the bass plays a part. The bass have something that the guitar don't have. Many won't know this especially those who are new to it. There is something that the bass can do that will make u addicted to it. I know and that's why i;m loving it...for those who want to know, go try and figure out what the special thing. Try to express urself using the bass and the guitar, then u might know the different. If u are able to full express urself with the bass, then u know what i'm feeling here. and to those who look down on us bassist.....u just missed out something good...

hi

i feel you guys..yes the bass is a nice instrument to play..im not superb at slapping actually i dont slap or maybe i got no skillz in it lol but i enjoyed playing groovy stuffs on the bass during jamming with my band but im a guitarist/vocalist, so u know ..i gotta do somehting else. I'D NEVER look down on bass/bassist coz i know and i love the diff art the bass does in a band it ADDS COLOR!without a punching bass or good bassist your band sounds crap seriously! so BASS/BASSIST is VERY important to a band and in a band. BTW im still looking for bassist my group doin blues/funk/country and actually whatever genre ..if ure serious bassist into serious business PM me my band is holding an audition. for audition pm me.

sometime i get the feeling that im being treated as a "REQUIREMENT' for forming a band, rather than part of the band, and im so sick of this i think i might just pull out already.

Remember people, if you think your bassist sucks, let him off, he will find another band that plays stuff he actually likes rather than playing your stuff which he doesnt really give a damn and just close 1 eye and play.

Hmm.

hehe anyone want to play bass for my band? PM for details (I know this belongs in the classfieds but I just could not resist) :)

bassist is just like lead guitarist in live band performance...the only difference is that they are playing low key notes...there is rhythm guitarist and a vocalist to coordinate to perform songs

man442: i disagree with you. it's not lead guitar with low notes. it's about the groove and setting a platform for the band to take off. it's about working with the drummer to keep a solid beat and working with the rest of the band to accompany the melody.

yes, we are hardly heard but we work with the whole band to "coordinate and perform songs". not just the rythm guitarist and vocalist.

there's a lot more to bass that most people don't know.

It can be played without drumbeat, only accompanied with vocal alone also...
Yeah I agree with you it play a series of notes that bring the lead to the main musical instruments or vocal...

personally, as a bassist, this is how I view the instrument:

the bass guitar is an instrument able to fill in the area between percussion, rhythm and lead melody (whether guitars or keyboards).

you are able to play melodies on the instrument and you are able to provide rhythm and groove. you can do both, or you can focus on one or the other depending on what's more tasteful and appropriate. Or you can do neither and simply chug away on your own- sometimes that's appropriate too.

but being a bass player gives you a wide wide array of options that may not seem obvious immediately. It's fun to groove along to a drummer or play melodically to a rhythm guitarist.

for example if you're looking to provide driving force (rock), you can lock in tightly drummer if there is one, or simply give a strong sense of force with chugging 8th notes. If you're looking to provide a counter melody to a lead line, or to emphasize it (punk), you can do that too. If you want to give a feel of an open groove, you can loosely give and take with the other musicians you're playing with.

the primary role of a bass is to be a supporting instrument, which should not be overlooked. but when that can be satisfied... uh, satisfactorily, then you can constantly find new ways to contribute elsewhere in ways that drummers or guitarists alone may not be able to.

keep rocking the low end \m/

80s_people : you're trying to say that 'you = mouse' ? then i've got nothing to say already bro
