Music career - piano teaching

Hi,

I have been working as an exec with engineering degree, for 6 years and am rekindling my interest ( I stopped playing piano more than 10 yrs ago) in piano - even to consider teaching in this area. I have grade 8 piano practical, grade 5 theory. Will like to consider doing a diploma or degree.

1) Is there any music school I can enroll in to do a diploma or degree on a part-time basis and how long will it take?

2) How much does a piano teacher earn teaching in private music school? Do MOE pay more for music teachers in teaching in its schools?

I will really like to know more about pursuing a career down this path as I am interested in piano playing but like to know also if it is a sustainable career in terms of salary. Anyone willing to share your experience?

You can try your luck in Nafa to study music teaching, but it is 5 year contact.
There is private one that teaches in school. $10-$20 per hour for assistant trainer. $40-$60 per for main trainer.

Hi,

You can either do a degree or pursue DipABRSM (Teaching) which is a professional certificate to make you more credible to teach.

You may learn with a private teacher as well to pursue DipABRSM (Teaching) and you can do part time until you are ready to take exams, twice a year. ABRSM will be more recognised than other music board.

I am not so familiar with the pay scheme in schools as I am a full time Piano instructor. For teaching at MOE, you can teach music but need to take up other subjects as well.

You may contact me further if you wish to. Hope this helps.

hi new here! ><

i'm in not quite sure actually which to choose because now that nafa have a teaching scheme which i may want to do

but anyway which is better? being a private teacher with a Ba in music or taking the dip scheme at nafa?

and it's the pay that i really want to know being a private piano instrutor comparing to taking the MOE scheme

so if u could help? haha...

duncanrox, being a private music teacher is like running his/her own business. The per-hour rates are quite good, around $20 to $100. That is like teaching ABRSM grade 1 to grade 8.

If each week teach about 30 hours of $30, that is about $900 already.
