Hi all. Im new in this forum as i juz came across this webbie in yahoo today. I know this topic had been posted 2 or 3 times before in the previous years but i still had some queries regarding this course for the ppl who are goin to garduate or already have graduated from the course.
1) What are the future prospects in this course? (what can i do in the future?)
2) Will you be in demand after you graduate from this course? (im talking about both graduating from poly or uni)
3) Would you encourage ppl to go into this course?
I hope someone can reply fast as i had juz taken my o lvl results and choosing my courses now. My deadline is this coming monday. =X
A little bg info about me: I juz started learning drums about a year ago, i am really into it. I gt a drumset, enrolled into classes and even picked up dvds and books regarding techniques. But im not sure if i really have a future if i choose this course as my main priority. Oh btw i gt 13 for my L1R4, altough it is 1 mark more than the cop, but i am goin to apply or the JPSAE (the interview and stuff). Thx to everyone who read this thread and replies to it. Cheers! =)

firstly, hope u are talking abt DMAT course in SP.

1) What are the future prospects in this course? (what can i do in the future?)

lol, u know wad, this is the question i hate most when people enquire about the course. But i will tell them , this couse focuses alot on music production, and after u graduate u can be anything that u have interest on pertaining the music industry (provided u have the knowledge and skills ). this course of cause is not gonna teach u everything under the sun, and my lecturers often tell us to do lots of self-learning. In my opinion, this course covers a wide range of stuff regarding music and audio stuff, so u can decide for urself which path u wanna take.

2) Will you be in demand after you graduate from this course? (im talking about both graduating from poly or uni)

if u are talking about being just an audio engineer, the chances of survival in singapore is quite low.. ask any of the lao jiaos engineers here. but in terms of music production (scoring for media, etc.), really depends on urself, see whether u got the neccesary skills and network. If u really work on it, results will show for sure (applies to anything else in life.)

3) Would you encourage ppl to go into this course?
i would definitely encourage anyone to go for course. and seeing u got 13 points.. u confirm will get called for audition.. cause they will shortlist those that are near the range of the cut off point. if u got like 20 points, its hard to even get a chance to audition unless ur portfolio is really impressive for them to give u a chance.

jsut to add on, if u really keen on coming into this course, prepare urself with some basic music theory (helps u on half the course loL!) and make sure u are totally passionate about ur music woohoo! this will bring u farrr

Thx alot teraslasch for ur fast reply! hmmm I tink i will go for this course ba, cuz i really like music a lot. Worse come to worse if nobody wants to hire me den i can still sell insurance with my father! haha! anyway life has to be full of regrets to be meaningful. lol! thx agn. ^^

i just graduated!! wheee...

honestly i feel that this course also does not exactly focus too much on anything, and instead is diverted into too many different things. so you won't be a pro in anything after graduating from this course.

Like for example they teach you music theory (classical), arranging, acoustical science, recording and mixing, songwriting, and the list goes one. They don't exactly focus on one main thing. So after you graduate from this course, you may find yourself needing to further your studies focusing on just one skill.

Hope you get where i'm coming from.

thx estherix for replying. ^^ actually im just wondering tt can i rely on this course for a living?
Will this be a worst case scenario after i graduate from this course? : nobody is interested in your works at all (after all nt many musicians get to be famous <pls correct me if im wrong>) and nobody is hiring sound engineers and u become jobless for months and cant even afford ur lunch.

heh im having 2nd thoughts about putting this course as inside my top6 choices

although i love music and stuff. im also afraid of my career prospects and stuff

i got 12 points by the way.

i heard they only take in 40 ppl eh?

yep. the course intake is around 40 people only.

pertaining job prospects, is really see individual, ur talent, ur skills , ur music and of course ur luck. if u are really passionate about ur own music, i feel that u should just do it when u're young, u don't have a family to feed. yet.

As like wad my senior said, this course is quite diversified, so if u can , concentrate on the thing u like most and learn alot , really ALOT by urself. If u need help u can always approach our lecturers.

i agree with Esther. if you're looking for something that teaches the Audio part of it, i would say go to SAE. though the fees are much higher, the focus on Audio there is so much better.

like what Esther said, here in SP, we learn everything from music theory, to arranging, to some other really irrelevant modules. so if you think that you wanna learn everything about music, but in bits and pieces of it, then SP's the place to be.

and yeah, each cohort only has about 40 people. max is probably 43.

if u r really Passionate abt yr music go for audio tech but make sure u learn really hard. The demand out there is low so if u wanna earn more u will have to be the top.

Anyway if u wan learn audio tech, go to Laselle. they are more specialised and everybody there r musicians, u will be practising all day with the pros

yah if u really wanna do this, you may find yourself in quite a ruthole in the beginning. but if u're from a rich family who can support you while you are discovering your dreams, then good for you.

but if you are not, i'd advise you to do something else first and earn enough money, THEN follow your dream.

but then again it's always good to discover your dreams young. so if this is really what you wanna do, you feel that you don't mind roughing it out for the sake of your dreams and passion, then go for it.

but if u don't love it enough, don't waste your time.

trust the above sayings....i am roughing it out now. And wish that I am an accountant now in the day or something making big bucks. and able to afford to buy a place, build my own studio and hire my own engineer to excute my dreams.

sigh.....

Robin

I've put m&a as my 1st choice, and with JPSAE, so now i'm working on my portfolio and stuff.
