Hey guys... does anybody know what are really good monitor speakers for a home studio, besides Mackie?
Or good monitor speakers that can match up to Mackie speakers

if you have the budget for adam a7s, be sure to check out focal audio cms50/cms65. they are among the best in their price bracket.

Go have a listen at some monitors you like first to get the general idea. Then just understand your monitor's in and outs. Any entry-mid level and above would be good.

I recently got my Mackie HR624Mk2's, pretty damn great pair. Makes the good sound great and the shit sound pretty much not good. Very balanced sound.

I heard somewhere that M-audio's Studiophile AV 40 are good enough... They're currently selling for S$295 a pair... can anyone confirm their performance?

@chad: how much for the Mackie HR624Mk2's?

No need to fight in the list, yeah. Like B&W 800 series, there are many many studio using it. They cost five-figure so don't expect too many studio using it, just a few power name will do(Abbey Road). Other brand which is really high-end is Wilson Audio. They can't fight in the long list of studio as their monitor can cost six figure. These two brand I mention, they strong in recording and master studio. Also they appear a lot in high-end audiophile market. Other speaker brand, I can't remember they produce 7 figure speaker.

It is possible to achieve a decent mix even on entry level monitors. Keep checking your mixes on different playback systems - headphones, iPod earphones, hi-fi system, computer speakers, car stereo. Your monitors may not have the flattest response, but as long as you know how they translate, you can compensate accordingly. Hope you find something that works for you.

@porbista: Yeah i have heard the studiophile AV40. i believe the price was $250 at sinamex. I would consider them to be the best solution for a budget of below $300.

Also, I would consider them to be the minimum standard for any decent mixing speakers. All the speakers I have heard that were lower-end than this are generally way too "off" to do decent mixing on.

Yes you guys have touched on the fact of Translation, and you can get used to a pair of speaker no matter how cheap or expensive by physco-acoustically training you listening. This comes by great lengths of training and having the ability and opportunity to listen to a verity of speaker system again cheap and good ones.

But, with a great monitor you will be able to hear your own imperfections in your mix and this has nothing to do with Translations. Hope this makes sense. Cheers.
