modding my guitar

i'm currently jamming with my friends and maybe will be having a performance at sch next year.

In this case, Depends on your budget. personally having owned a LP Special II b4, the workmanship isn't too bad, and the pickups are a tad weak for my liking.

Even a stock Epiphone LP with its stock pickup won't do much improvement.

Heres a proposition for you. If you are on a low budget, u can consider this:

A set of Tesla Plasma III pickups @ Standard Value costs $165... with it, your sound should be as good as most other guitars on the market, if not better. (however, Pots and Switch affect tone as well, so u might like to change those if its really poor quality pots). After which changing your pickups, you'll need an effects pedal. Because you are starting out and have no idea what is good or bad for analog pedals, get a cheap but good MFX pedal like Korg AX3G or Zoom G2 or POD Floor, where you can play anywhere in any venue, and still sound the same regardless of amplifiers.

In the case where my church now has no guitar amp, i still sound the same because my MFX allows me to DI straight into the PA system, and then use a power-speaker as my feedback monitor.

After which once you start learning about good sound, and gears, you can save up for a better guitar, and a better effects pedal, and finally a better amp.

I'm an advocate of good live sound, compared to good bedroom sound. Anyone can sound good in the bedroom given enough practice and a good guitar + amp, but not everyone knows how live sound works and how to get a good sound there. Since you are going to perform next year in school, my suggestion is learn how to use your rig well before upgrading to better gears as your tastes might change once you start improving...
