the elitist series are the new MIJ epi. but reading epiphone/gibson website, most posters prefer the old non-elitist MIJ one. i think it's because the old MIJ epis were made by the same people from Orville.

the best bet is go try both type of Epi and see which one you like.

some of epi are manufactured for japan market only and not for export. And they do have the open book headstock like their gibson counterpart
