are meinl cymbals great sounding? wad's the hype abt zildjian?
the term "mein cymbals"is rather generic, because each brand of cymbals haf different series which haf different characters in them which may or may not be "great sounding".
as for "great sounding",it will ultimately end up with personal preference, you will have to listen to the cymbals yourself and lets your ears do the judging.what sounds great to others may not sound great to you.but if u want some rough info about meinl,i would say that their cymbals are very unique,eg. series such as candela, generation X and MB10.you can check out their website to hear some of the sounds of the cymbals for yourself.
as for the hype about zildjian, its is due to the fact that it is a large company with the capacity to endorse many famous drummers who are idols of many people and therefore, these fans of the famous drummers would naturally be influenced about getting zildjian and hence get "stereotyped" into the "zildjian is the one and only cymbals that is the best!" kind of mentally.
especially the younger generations of today, probably 80%-90% of them do not know of brands such as istanbul, bosphorus or even meinl, not to mention UFIP,trojan, saluda or orion.
therefore i think that people should explore more into these so-called "minority" cymbals rather than just going into zildjians, paiste or sabian cymbals without giving anything else a chance.true that these 3 big company do produce some top notch cymbals, but each cymbal has its own different characters.for those who have explored into many variations of cymbals, good for you
for those who are confined to these 3 brands,i would suggest that they stop being brand conscious and widen their choices ,even if cymbals are made in china or somewhere not that reknown may not mean they sound bad, everything deserves a chance.then can you try and enjoy the many flavours that other cymbals can provide
all the info i have typed is not to imply anything on you ala_carte,but to help those who have a constrained mentality towards cymbals, hope you dont get the wrong idea
