Bought this album out of curiousity and boy never regret it. Mastadon third studio album offering is an immense slab of brutally heavy rock that veers wildly between all-out thrash on cuts and progressive, almost jazzy guitar work.I never been a fan of Brent Hinds and Troy Sanders who share on vocal duties when come to live performance, but overall their sound range from elegantly smooth guitar to more complex, complicated passages. With guest appearances by Scott Kelly of Neurosis on "Crystal Skull", Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age on "Colony of Birchmen", as well as keyboardist Isaiah "Ikey" Owens and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta on "Pendulous Skin" and "Siberian Divide", respectively, this album shouldn't be a miss for headbangers.....

(1) "The Wolf Is Loose"
(2) "Crystal Skull" (featuring Scott Kelly)
(3) "Sleeping Giant"
(4) "Capillarian Crest"
(5) "Circle of Cysquatch"
(6) "Bladecatcher"
(7) "Colony of Birchmen" (featuring Joshua Homme)
( 8 ) "Hunters of the Sky"
(9) "Hand of Stone"
(10) "This Mortal Soil"
(11) "Siberian Divide" (featuring Cedric Bixler-Zavala)
(12) "Pendulous Skin" (featuring Isaiah "Ikey" Owens)

i started with Remission which received less spotlight than Leviathan but was definitely on par. this band is one of those non-BM i'm still listening to...

I noticed that Brann Dailor's drumming is more crazy in the earlier albums, especially Remession and Call of the mastodon. For anyone who is getting intro to the band for the first time, the album Leviathan is highly recommended. Brann's drumming is subdued and the songs are a bit more straightforward...but anyways...one hell of a band!!!
