kk i dunno what it's really called. you know thos marching snares and stuff. it's kinda cool. i'm still learning to do it but i'm going nowhere. anybody got any quick tips?

Hi, i'm currently serving my ns life in the SAF bands. N i do many parades. The roll u are talking about is actually a double stroke roll. The buzz roll is used more for concerts, due to its cleaner more constant sound. However in marching context especially in e outdoors, the double stroke roll provides a louder roll, It also allows the drummers to keep time better.

wahahha okie i was in band B under yusri, and we did buzz rolls for freaking everything. glad its changed. actually buzz rolls then to be dirtier i feel, dlbs or controlled rolls are actually alot cleaner.
do u guys still wear gloves?
i use to use Zildjian anti vibe sticks for parades, takes the toll out of ur hands abit more

Basics

Talking about Buzz Roll and Double Strokes, I've got a few questions. Yeah I'm new here, and a newbie drummer too. Played for about 1 month plus only. Been playing to songs for the past 1 month, like Green Day songs mostly, but now I've decided to get back to working on my techniques.

I finally managed to learn the buzz roll, but for me to do the buzz roll i have to hold my sticks in my fingers without my palm to do the buzz roll, but I realise that my fingers esp my pinky will hurt after sometime due to the vibration from the sticks.

Is my grip wrong or should I get anti-vibe stick?

just a question... you know for drum solos some people would do a roll on the snare followed by the toms. is that the double stroke roll or buzz roll?

Pls correct me if I am wrong.

1) When u execute a double-stroke roll, where the strokes are not too close to each other resulting in obvious even sticking to the ears, it's also known as "open roll".

2) When u execute a "Buzz roll", the grip tightens and the stick doesn't necessary bounces twice. Some drummers let it bounce more than that, but evenly. This result in the "strokes" being close to each other, thus it is also known as a "close roll"

So depending on what u hear on the snare drum prior to the tom hits. THey are most likely a open or close roll.

Speaking of marching drums. I've seen a lot of "samba" percussion essembles in Singapore. Is there a "drum Corp" kind of thingie here? Anyone have any idea?

your grip is wrong. although i can't tell u wat cause i need to see it.

Blurr one, correct me if I am wrong:

Ryuxdragonx:

Your little pinky hurts. That's definitely a wrong way to hold the stick to execute a buzz, ain't it? Perhaps u should try to concentrate your grip on your thumb and first two fingers (in some cases just thumb and first finger).

MOst importantly let experience drummers like Blurr see and correct u.

All the best!

yusri .. that sucks.. the champion...
maswan all the way.. magic powers are strong within him

hey jenn, hows the drumming man? thks for the compliment man but i still have such a long way to go exprience wise.
Ryuxdragonx - come down to the music labs at paradiz, bring the sticks tht u use and i'd try my best and see wats up with ur hands. i have a feeling its ur stick positioning. i'm there mon to thurs and sat after 3.
dissonace - never had maswan so i wldn't know. yusri is just misunderstood honestly, he isn't all that bad. he helped me out once and he's cool in my book really.

oh and the youtube video by dtmaniac, there is no reference pt to the strokes. they dun have the quater note playing, which i think is important when doing 9 stroke and 15 stroke rolls, a reference point wld be gd

actually while i was still in my school band last time, i came to a conclusion that the buzz roll doesnt have to be quick especially bouncy double stroke rolls, but rather just extremely quick bounces on hand at a time. like L(bounce v quickly) R(bounce v quickly). N i hold it such that my palm doesnt touch the stick. For a buzz roll i think its fine but if ur intend to do double strokes its better not the rely too much on the bounce like in the buzz roll, but using more finger and wrist action n all. buzz rolls are entertaining in a drum solo though:D

Thanks

Thanks for the offer blurr. My friend from concert band corrected it for me already. Bad gripping technique. =) Bad habits
