Maintaining The DrumSet

haha... mantaining ar...

I usually clean my set every 3 months or so loh... as and when it gets dirty. usually i use like dry mop cloth (magiclean those type). it works wonders both on the shell and the lugs and everything

one cloth can clean like alot loh so price wise its pretty worth it

only thing that i have prob wif is cymbals... tried drum hobbyst method of using mr metal... my cymbal looks worst now... no patience lahz, maybe wrong method .. haha

MOST IMPORTANT! Buy a dehumidifier! Our climate is too humid...will cos damage to shell over time. Cheap one is "thirsty hippo" from NTUC or some $2 shops even sell pirated ones....keep them next to your kit.

as for the hardware (hoop, lugs, tension rods) i wipe the rust using Autosol. It works like magic but need to rub abit harder to see the result.

yah i use to have 4 hippos under my ayotte's.
i use to use piano polish to give my drums a shineeeeee

4!?!?!?!?!? thats alot[/code]

i use only one hippo placed just behind the drums. I only put it about a month and it already full with water. I think i'm going to put more after this.

yah i use to buy them at this uncle shop near my place, they come in a pack of 4. why wait is wat i say hahhaha

Well - 1st I think I better buy the Hippo thing - (Guess must buy alot - wah chai-lat).

OK here is how I maintain my 5 Kits.

Once a Week

All my kit's shell are cleanse using Guitar cleaning lotion, then polish using -Guitar Polish. But in 1 to 2 days time - you will see dust, tiny particles on shell - so every 2 days I clean them with a Car Polish Cloth.

Once every 2 months

All drums hardware will be touch up with WD-40....

The Truth Is: -

I spoke to some people who are expert in CHROMING...and they told me. Whether Hardware rust over time had nothing to do with us eg taking care of the hardware by applying something on the Chroming - - in fact if we always say apply something weekly on the chrome (because of fricition) it will wear/peel out out faster.

It means - It is the Quality Of the Chroming that is most important here if the hardware were to stay Shining for 10 or 20 30 years and nothing to do with -applying proctection over Chrome area....

But - Good Chromming (with more Microns) is VERY VERY EXPENSIVE.....

wah once a week take out the drum shells, heads and all that just to put guitar lotion and car polish wash ah?? wahh.. than must tune back again.. pengsan sia...

summore u got so many kits, and one kit got how many piece also... sian.. haha

my old drumset i practically just use a wet old cloth and wipe the dust off it... than later dust come again just wipe lo... put inside aircon room no rusts...

the chroming started peeling off on the hardwares on my lugs but only for just one particular lug.. but i replaced it when that happens.. buy from ranking a new lug at 3 bucks. now i have a tama swingstar but appearance wise not so good bah...

i put at balcony now.. haha... but i jaga my cymbals more now.. haha

Marc, not I do one, someone else clean & polish for me one.....Hahahaha taking about this - Can you imagine I rear Song-Birds for 5 years now - once every week I bring them go "Chai" ..challenge-Singing and my birds are very good...people there ask me how you take care har? - - - Kekekeke my reply "I've never for once bath the birds, feed or even clean their cage"...you should see the shocking appearance on their face....Hahaha.

Seriously - DO NOT use water to clean a drum..no good really - can rust one the metal parts.

where u usually hang ur birds ah?? i every sunday after my religious class at bedok north area got alort people hang the bird there..

my friend father the house very noise hang the bird man... but quite sad ah birds are meant to fly spread their wings and fly. but kena caged can only fly around the cage only.. i go my friend house toilet got bird ontop of my head watch me pee hahaha...

but what's the fun of keeping birds in cage and watch them sing ah??

i everyday sit in front of my computer, the small birds with the yellow body and green wings always come coz they build nest at my mom's plants outside the house... wah damn noisy ah those little fella... but that's nature.. sometimes nice sometimes irritating.. but at least they come and go whenever they want:D/.

MARC!!!!

NEVER USE WATER!!!!!

haha water and wood will never go... bad enuff you know singapore so humid so put dehimidifier.. den you go wipe wif water defeat the purpose liao...

haha... i love using dry mops... they work wonders...

Whahahaha ! Wah Bro Reuben idea is really bery bery wonderful - -.

Let's us all now imagine –

Bro Reuben using a dry-mop (those with the long-stick) standing right in front of his Kit – then cleaning process now gets started...he uses the mop clean the Bass drum (bery clever no need to stood or squart -down) after cleaning the bass drum - he use the mop poke it hard on the Pedal……”Boom Boom” Reuben smile happily and love the sound.

Now Reuben cleans the Tom-Tom – same thing rub the mop round the toms in circular motion and and after cleaning the toms – this time, he take out the mop at the end of the stick (detachable type) – put it on his head, looks at the mirror, and flip the so-call long hair (which is actually the mop and smilingly he tells himself “Wow…I’m Hip am I”….Kekekeke ! then he looks at the toms and start to do a solo with the Big-Fat-Mop-Stick using one-hand and end with a one-hand-roll….Bravo Reuben :smt040 :smt040

PS: ..Cannot angry with me one har Bro Reuben – I just feel like making fun of you – I long time never do that liao…cheers !

haha.. RD you arh... haha

ok lahz.. sounds like wad i will do.. except i dont attach the cloth to the mop.. just the cloth alone.. but halfway while cleaning i always end up playing.. haha

i really really doubt the thirsty hippo can solve the prob. its meant for cupboards issn't it? even u keep changing it weekly, i still think it doesn't work.

i guess onli a strong dehumidfier will work. those that require ac power.

Yeah, thirsty hippo was designed for confined spaces, inside a wardrobe, drawer, etc. It's not ideal, but it's slightly better than nothing, if you're very concerned about humidity.

Generally, in SG, as long as it's not too extreme (leaky damp basement, or just outside a bathroom etc), and you have good air circulation, and you don't expose it to extreme humidity/temperature fluctuations, your drums are going to be okay.

Unless, of course, you're talking about a Canopus Zelkova, then, maybe you want to be extra careful :)

my cleaning method...

For snare/toms

well i use vacuum cleaner to clean the crooks and cranny where there will have dust accumulations (i use the brush head) eg, in between the hoops and the skin. shell wise, i use the magiclean wipes la...affordable stuff. for hoops/metal parts on drums, i'll use the dry car polish cloth to wipe. at the current moment, my hoops are shiny so i dont need to use metal agent to clean it yet hee...i'll bring extra car polish cloth during my small gigs, so before gig wipe hoops (while still on the drums la) - after gig when trasported back home, wipe again to remove the hand prints and stuff...heee

Cym stand and hardware

I use brasso. I dont really rub it hard (i'm a gentle person) just apply and wipe it off with clean cloth.

Cymbals

never bathe or wipe hee...i just let it be...kekeke...:p

den i use 2 thirsty hippos - one below the snare and bass dr, the other in between the bass drum and floor...basically left and right la hee...that if i'm not home frequently. normally when i'm home i'll just open up all the windows hee

lastly i dont use water. i only have water beside me for drinking lol....
