Sorry! I am quite a newbie here...

I am deciding to buy a LP this june or july but have not yet decide which specific model to buy.

I am not sure about the Differences between Classic, Standard and Custom, except the covered pu and opened pu... and price...

Anyone know about it betteR?

Thanks in advance...

Wen.

If you're talking abt the Gibson range, then if you can afford it, go for Custom. I guess the difference between the three models are the specs, like pickup used and neck profile etc, whether which is better for you you might want to try first hand. But of cos, between the Custom and the other two, the price gap is significant, so I'm not sure if you want to compare directly. I can say definitely for all the LPs I've tried, the custom has the best workmanship and feel (Some classics I've tried, the neck a bit too sticky). Ya, but it also costs the most, so I think you'll probably have to consider that.

They have different specs, significant differences in standard and classic is the pickups, classics are only available in the 60s slim taper neck carve, standards are are availble in either the fat 50s carve or the slim taper 60s carve. Other than that the standard usually has a flamed or slightly flamed top classic have a plain top.

Customs have different fretboard wood also being ebony instead of rosewood. Im not sure if the neck is available in the 60s carve or not. Apperence wise customs have a bounded headstock and inlays on the headstock.

standard. tried and tested. custom would cost way too much. you could use the money for a good amp or new pickups. but if you can go try them out.

Unless it's 8K for a VOS Custom for a plekked custom, if not I won't pay so much for a Custom. A used Custom is not even 3.5K.

forget the LP, go SG supreme

Care to elaborate regarding your comment?

well i'm not saying that the LP is bad, but the sg supreme is a decent guitar to compare with the LP. both use humbucker pickups although the SG Sup uses 57 classics and the LP standard uses burstbuckers. however, IMO in terms of playability, the SG supreme is better because it has 24 frets and the neck joint location is at the 22nd fret for easy access to the higher frets, compared to the LP which has a NJL at the 16 fret. another significant difference is the species and thickness of the necks but im not too sure which one is more suitable for ur liking.

in terms of looks, if u go for lava burst or emerald burst(very classy), u have a guitar with gold hardware which looks incredible

its just an opinion, many of u LP players might have ur says too yea?

FYI

the GIBSON LP standard retails at 3.84k at sweelee according to their website

the GIBSON SG SUPREME retails at 3.59k at ezimusic

cheers

SG & LP are on different turfs albeit both bearing the Gibson brand name. if you're accustomed to both models, you'll know that replicating an LP tone is quite impossible with an SG. the LP has a deep, low voicing which pretty much defines its tonal character. on the contrary, the SG doesn't profess in the lower tonal spectrum but has more midrange on offer. it isn't too bright sounding though, which IMO is a good thing. quite immaterial to match the 2 in terms of tone.

the playability of the guitar is arguably determined by its neck profile & upper fret access (latter is subjective), the number of frets has a diminished influence here.

prices at the swee lee website aren't the latest. the LP Std retails for $5K.

you're not wrong to say the SG is a great guitar per se, but let's be objective here. Hongwen mentioned he's looking for an LP.

agreed, subversion. my point exactly too.

BTW, the LP standard is now 5k at sweelee?!! 8O damn

Since when was 24 frets better? There are some who prefer the tone of a 22 fret guitar. There are also some who do not play up to the 24th fret.

THANKS THANKS

OH MAN really thank you guys for all the comments...

My interest was set on LP after a few months of scouting... have not really tried them out.... i am still thinking on whether to get a Gibson Or Epiphone cause alot of my friends told me that the price difference is way too over.....

I have tried a Ep LP classic, the tone was lovely, but one thing that showed as a con to be is the fat neck, maybe i am used to playing thin neck, but i would prefer a thin neck....

Will the tone be different with the covers? Since its the same pu right ?

Wen.

I guess LP necks are generally wider la, I'm sure some of the models got slightly thinner profile, not sure what models though.

If you like thin necks, you can try some of the PRS single cut models (since we're in this price range) or go for ibanez and strats. I think ibanez has super necks even though I'm more a LP player. 8)

LP necks are narrow, narrower than SG/ Start/ Ibanez.

PRS singlecut models are of the wide-fat profile, it's anything but thin.
