Hi,

I would like to enrol for a diploma in music at la salle or nafa. However, it states on their website, that ABRSM grade 5 is required. how do I go about gettin this ABRSM qualification and how long does it take? Can anyone share? And is entry into nafa or la salle for music considerably easy?

I cant play the piano. I can play the guitar, bass, and drums though.. Been playing in a band for 7 years now, performed more than 50 shows and have a demo. will this help gettin entry?

Would appreciate any answers from anyone here.. Thanks!

You need to enrol for the ABRSM Theory exam in order to get the cert. Best way to get started is to learn the syllabus from a music school or independent teachers. Grade 1 and 2 Theory is pretty basic.. You will learn scales, how to read the notes (i.e. dao gey), chords, key signatures etc. Do note that theory is largely based on the piano so you gotta get familiar with they keyboard. In Grade 5 Theory, you will learn a little music history, and more advanced stuff (can't really remember coz' I took the exam so long ago). If I'm not wrong, the exam is only held once or twice a year (during my time at least).

I guess you'll probably need 6 months (more or less) to prepare for the exam.

There are exceptions. If i recall correctly, your playing has to be around a grade 5 standard and your theory about 7/8. Give them a call or something...

hi ely you can come down to the music school that i am currently teaching right now its called magic fiddler in orchard they do provided the abrsm music theory examination there should be 2 intake one in june and december if im not wrong but if you already know some basic music theory than you can probably jump and not take from grade 1 . Im currently waiting for my exams which is in june:p

you can also try checking out malaysia music school icom i think its cheaper than nafa or lasalle

There is no prerequsites for ABRSM Grade 5 Theory. Register yourself on ABRSM singapore website. Check their site regularly to see when is the Theory opened for registration. Mean while, practise your music theory starting from grade one. 1-3 is pretty easy. Need more time for grade 4 & 5. You can start buying the books:

The AB guide to music theory Part 1 & 2 (pink & blue)
Music Theory in Practise Grades 1 - 5
Get the specimen papers for grade 5 also
