Hey guys.. Been playing e keyboard for quite a while.. can roughly figure out some chords by ear.. but now im kind of stagnant in progress. playing e same style over n over again.. dunno how to improve.. any suggestions..

Hi,

Mayb you can work on ur left hand first; try different ways of playing (arppegiate) a chord;
say for a given C chord, can play

1) C G C (basic)
2) C G C E
3) C G C D E
4) C G D E C

you can also choose the notes u want to repeat, like instead of 1) C G C E can play C G C E C E C G by repeating C E n then comin down

if r past this stage, prob can do things like :
1) add chord tones/notes (e.g either C, G,E when the chord is Cmaj) to melody on right hand to make the melody sound thicker
2) Use a mix of different accompaniment patterns; like hold some chords, run some, play at different registers

There's actually alot you can do actually; explore ! hope this helps

Regards,
KJ

learn scales.. you will find a chord pattern there.. major, minor, harmonic, melodic, pentatonic, iodean and others... then try to mess aroung will the scales.. for example, get a blues chord progression the mess aroung with the blues scale up and down as you like dont forget to mess around with your creativity... have fun improvising on scales..

improvise

yar..how i wish i could too..but i'm not that profficient in pentatonic..cus firstly..the scale's kinda weird..unlike the minor and major scales..

Quite the opposite of guitarists ... My guitarist fren learnt pentatonics first before major scales or minor scales.

Think that's because we being classically trained are taught pentatonics in higher level unlike guitarist who learnt when they started on scaling. However it's one of the most widely used scale today.

Shortcut learning pentatonics:
(learning curve: usually 1 day)

Think of patterns in pentatonics ... just like guitarist do ... use them over a progresion example blues progression(1-4-5) or the usual 1-6-2-5-3-6-2-5 that we always play in pop music. just think a moment on the pattern and the progression over it, u ll get it quick. The rest just practice on the phrasing over backing track or different progression or any other songs u like

(hint: for pop songs played in major scale use the 6th note of the scale as the root for pentatonics scale. For example: The songs in C, then the pentatonic scale would be in Am pentatonics. Phrase it creatively otherwise will sound oriental).

Am pentatonics: A-C-D-E-G

C major pentatonics: C-D-E-G-A

find the connection and think about it!!

just my 2 cents worth.
