This holiday season, dive into a vast ocean of sounds and rhythms where world, jazz and folk music meet and hauntingly familiar yet distinctive folk melodies resonate.
Colourful and chimerical, the music of Kailin Yong’s Qilin Group evokes a world of peace and harmony where each member demonstrates, through their musical microcosm, how their beliefs and dreams can co-exist with one another.
Kailin, with his fiddle and voice, cries, growls, laughs, sighs and soars in the name of love and freedom; Weixiang’s wicked and inventive jazz piano comping offers a nice contrast to the uplifting grooves of Pablo’s drumming; Felix’s bass lays down a lush sonic carpet to help the group stay grounded, like the assuring and nurturing presence of an old friend.
Formed early April 2013, the quartet creates a refreshing mix of original world music that radiates with a keen awareness of vast cultural and emotional landscapes.

About the band
The Qilin Group was formed to realise violinist/composer Kailin Yong’s vision to bring people together whilst celebrating diversity. After almost 20 years of living, working and travelling in Europe and the US, Kailin’s homecoming brought New York-trained jazz pianist Weixiang Tan and Madrid-based percussionist Nantha Kumar together. After the latter left to return to Spain, Cuban drummer Pablo Calzado stepped in and brought his festive beats to the mix. A few gigs later, Berklee alumni bassist Felix Phang completed the line-up.
