JOjo Mayer and others

I was watching Modern Drummer 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed Jojo Mayer's set with his band Nerve. Basically he plays stuff that u'll hear DJ spin in Phuture at Zouk sucks a drum & Bass and Break-beats. I never thought that humans could replicate the sound of the drum machine. Later I found out about Johnny Rabb and some other artiste that specialise in playing such music. Dance music is no longer the kind of music we associate as "Ah Beng" music anymore with the bass on the qtr notes and snare on the 2 and 4s. It can be complext, complicated and sound like loads of fun to practice.

DOes anyone have any drum and bass, break beats, etc music to recommend??

Drum n Bass music

Hey man, you can check out bands like Roni Size, London Electricity, Photek, Shy FX, Ray Keith. The list is pretty exhaustive! I'm still trying to find more DnB artists as I'm really interested in Drum n Bass drumming and the music. Working REEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAALLLLLLYYYYYYY hard to get my skills up at 170 - 180 bpm hahahaha!

Hey Alfe,

Been busy with work, which is good. But not much time to drum, that is not too good, but I've been thinking a lot bout it in my spare time.

Ebon Five,

Thanks for the recommendations. Where do u get these CDs from? Do u learn from books or by listening and experimenting??

: )X

Hey Drumdead,

Well I actually learnt it formally while i was studying in the states. I learnt some basic DnB-ish grooves taken from some excerpts from Johnny Rabb and Tony Venderosa (however you spell his name). The rest was just from listening to the music. It's really important to listen to the music. Nowadays all i hear in my head is dhoom da da DaDa de da da... And of course I try them out on the kit lah. It might be really daunting at the start coz the notes whizz by at 170 bpm or faster. What you can do is take some basic funk grooves and then try playing them faster just to hear how it sounds like.

So far I buy most of my cds from HMV. I'm trying to find other sources. Roxy Music at Excelsior Shopping Centre could be another place.

With regards to the grooves, if you want perhaps we can all get together and I can show you some stuff lah.
