Acclaimed American conductor John Nelson returns on September 18 and 19 to conduct the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s magnificent Symphony No. 2, a mammoth work also known as the ‘Resurrection’.
The symphony begins with a funeral march and arrives at a promise of resurrection, forcefully affirmed in the choral finale which features a spectacular offstage brass ensemble and magnificent rousing chorus. The SSO will also be joined by fast rising soprano Nicole Cabell and mezzo soprano Patricia Bardon.
Born in Costa Rica, John Nelson studied at the Juilliard School where he won the Irving Berlin prize in conducting. He has held the titles of Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony, the adventurous Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and the Caramoor Music Festival in New York. He has also been principal guest conductor of the Orchestre National de Lyon and artistic adviser to the Nashville and Louisville Orchestras.
Nicole Cabell, the 2005 winner of the BBC Singer of the World Competition in Cardiff and exclusive DECCA recording artist, is fast becoming one of the most sought-after lyric sopranos of today. Her solo debut album, “Soprano” was named “Editor’s Choice” by Gramophone.
Dublin-born Patricia Bardon studied with Dr Veronica Dunne at the city’s College of Music and came to early prominence as the youngest ever prize-winner in the Cardiff BBC Singer of the World Competition.
The HWA - SSO Charity Gala on 18 Sep is a fundraising concert proudly sponsored by the National Skin Centre and held in aid of the Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA).
