Jazz Guitar

I'm currently interested in learning jazz. Had quite a bit of stagnant time with rock.

I don't really know where to start learning jazz properly. I want to be careful not to start out the wrong way and end up getting stagnant somewhere down the road again.

I doupt yamaha or cristofori provide any formal jazz guitar lessons and i've to watch my balance between my music (definately not just a hobby) and my 'A's this year...

My current bank of songs consist of mainly classic rock, metal in its purest forms and neoclassical/power/progressive metal (my main influences). My guitar playin tends towards blues and i usually improvise in pentatonic and harmonic minor.

I'm currenly learning arpegios for sweeping and have minimal knowledge on the use of modes and how to match notes with full chords (basics of jazz?). Sight reading is bad, although i know exactly what the score is about (i'm in guitar ensemble).

What's the best way of starting? Free online jazz materials? Trying to learn this in conjunction with sight reading in hope of making it into MDC next year during my NS.

Constructive comments are welcomed. no use getting technical here cuz i've read other post and have seriously no idea what all those are about, needa start from the start.

Learn your 7th chords 9th chords and different shapes and stuff. and listen to lots of jazz.... (listen to stuff like george benson he's a good guy to start with)

Cuz listening should help you understand the rhythmic swing part of jazz.
You can visit online lesson sites like jazzguitar.be too. Very useful.

hope that helps

Funny that dhalif mentioned he was not interested in entering MDC before. Army changes you eh.

Sight reading is more valued for entrance into MDC.

Don't need to shred. Don't need to do neo-classical. Don't even need to do Jazz jazz.

You need to sight read and play decently, as per what cold_static544 said.

But.... more importantly, there must be a vacancy. ;)

read the jazz theory book by mark levine.. or any jazz theory books u can find in esplanade library.. and keep listening.. try singing along...

i find jazz melody much more diff to learn and sing den pop and rock..

hey DUDE, check out School of Music and the Arts at parkmall level 13.
i've been there, soaked in jazz for quite some time. do check it out man.

"But.... more importantly, there must be a vacancy. Wink"

heh... more impt if paul sim / maj tay like you. haha..

you're right. entrance to MDC must be very timely.

sight reading is a must, you've got to be musical at the very least. shredding is not a requirement.
