Hi guys, really confused about the versatility of the LP. The Les Paul Looks like a Jazz guitar to me. It is said that it is Very versatile is it true?
anyways im studying Jazz guitar Now (just started) so im planning to get a new guitar.

I like the les paul body, but is Les paul suitable for jazz? or should i get a jazzbox but i dun like the shape(no offence).

whats Les paul actually invented for?

Les Pauls are very versatile. They can definitely do jazz. If you're looking at fat, lush, thick, saturated, warm tones, then a Les Paul does it perfectly. The difference between the Les Pauls and the Jazzboxes are that the Les Pauls are solid-body guitars, so the entire body is a chunk of wood as opposed to being hollow. (Also means a Les Paul will weigh quite heavy, not just sound heavy)

Les Paul guitars was invented by Mr Les Paul himself. If you want to know about Les Paul guitars, it's best if you wiki it. In my opinion, any guitars can be used to play jazz, but from what i know, people commonly use strat, tele or sometimes even les paul guitars to play that genre.

I played a greco les paul custom and a tokai les paul.. tokai one was with some sd pickups.. and greco was the stock pickup.. tokai was not so a jazz les paul but greco was.. so.. pickups play a part too.. lp is great for jazz..

True. For jazz, all you need is a nice clean tone. It's a matter of which you prefer. Fat and warm (Les Paul) or thin and bright (Tele, Strat). I favour a telecaster, actually.

I'd recommend low-output pickups for jazz, mainly because they sound clearer and cleaner.

hmm ic, My guitar teacher recommended me to get a Good Ibanez RG or S. Becus after i study jazz i'll progress to rock, metal kinda stuff(thats wad i really like) but lol idk but the moment i see IBANEZ 1st thing that come to my mind is SHREDDERS' AXE METAL AXE.

Ibanez can handle jazz well? Versatile?

Any guitar can play jazz, its a matter of tweaking the tone to ur taste..neck pickup with tone rolled off but not too much :)

I personally can't picture an Ibanez RG in a jazz setting. Sure, it can get the tones, but its appearance is just too aggressive and heavy metal oriented. A Les Paul can do everything, so I gotta agree with ryancrl and recommend you get a Les Paul.

i love Ballad style of play too yeah occationally i would jam heavy stuff but if i were to compose instrumentals(like steve vai kinda stuff) i would'nt play hardcore stuff. so im thinking of either epiphone les paul custom or an Ibanez Rg350 or even Ibanez S470

What do u guys suggest?

i've never seen a Les Paul play country and chicken pickin

Now you've mentioned steve vai  and normally people would associate him with his ibanez jem :D I personally think that you should head down to stores and get your hands on a few semi hollows and solid bodies.

These are just general perceptions of the various brands of guitars

Ibanez--> perceived for heavier music for the purists, but if you feel comfortable with the tones coming out of it, why not?

Semi-hollows--> eg. ES-339, Epi Dot, lean more towards a nice clean tone, sounds great too with a little overdrive, sounds good to go with jazz, but of course amps and the settings play a part as well.
Some of the full hollows Ibanez Artcore series are bang-for-buck, I saw one AS series at Swee Lee not too long ago.

Fenders--> Strats/Teles lean towards more the bluesy stuff, but of course there are also metal bands proudly showcasing their Fenders.

If you're willing to invest in a pretty versatile, get the American made guitar, I suggest the Highway1 series which is pretty much quite under-rated everywhere. The humbucker version of it is a Fender Atomic humbucker which is pretty hot @16k i think.

Some retailers who are carrying it are Brendon@ bgwguitars and at Standard Value! Good luck dude, hope I helped in one way or another~

And yes, any guitar can handle jazz/metal etc etc

I'm going to side Les Paulz. Many many options out there, so go out and try em. Epiphone, Burny, Orville, Edwards and Rally, you should check these out (: (Edwards are naize)

However in the end, it all boils down to feel. Like groovy says, if you're comfortable with an Ibanez then why not?
