Hey I also staying round west coast.
last time when I was jamming also looking for place to practise.
I dun have a drum set as I think the noise will invite the men in blue to my house. And i had arguments with a particular guy in my band about that.
I usually air-play, even for my rollings. But you have to really have the song in your head.
Sounds a bit weird but it works for me on jamming days.
But I made it a habit of doing it late at night when everyone's asleep or else they'll think I gone bonkers.

Don't worry about the men-in-blue.
A little O/T, but I just thought it would be good for all drummers and musicians alike here to know a little about the "legal system" involving us musicians, and a little clause involving us, the drumset, loud noises, and being a public nuisance.
So basically, my neighbour's been complaining that I'm drumming even when my kit's in the HDB bomb-shelter (read: when my brother plays on it, i can barely hear my drumset over my itunes.)
Men-in-blue came, I invited them in to take a look at my kit, pointed out that it was 1pm, pointed out that I play for less than an hour, and told them to refer to my other neighbours singing karaoke.
Neighbour proceeded to take his "case" up to HDB, town council and the RC.
So I had to play mr nice-guy and entertain some overpaid civil servants from HDB, town council, and my obviously very bored RC chairman as they inspected my drumset, listened to how loud it was with the bomb shelter door closed, and from the neighbour's house per se.
Conclusion? I can legally play anytime as long as I don't play after 10.30pm, but I was quite nice to them and told them that I'd only play between 12pm to 2pm, and between 6pm to 8pm, limiting my practice to maximum 2 hours to be "fair to my friendly and tolerant neighbours (/spit)".
Bugger's been calling the cops a couple of times, but all they could do was "advice me to have a mediation with him and settle it" because apparantly, they cannot press any charges against me since its not a criminal offence, its a civil case, if the neighbour decides to actually take any form of action. But of course, he has to prove that I'm intentionally making noise to cause him intentional disturbance, which he can't prove. Basically, I'm in a win-win situation.
My advice to all musicians who have unreasonable neighbours is to either come to a peaceful settlement with them... you're not in the wrong if you're playing in the daytime, so let them know and give them a time frame when you'll play. AND GET IT DOWN IN BLACK AND WHITE in case they play punk with you. If it fails, remember, he who doesn't practice at 5am or at 12pm is a smart musician indeed.
Ok sorry for hijacking your thread like this, didn't want to make a new thread for it. Mods if you think it deserves a thread on its own, feel free to move it. Thanks
