It's either my hair or my job

I just got a part time job at Cathay cinemas (the new one opening next week). As an expat, this is pretty good but the pay is shit ($4.50hr)

Anyway I went to training on the weekend and it was all good until we went over the rules and policies of the place. They expect their male employees to have short hair.

Now currently I am trying to grow it. its been growing for about a year, and is very slow but its slowly getting there. where it is now is an achievement for me.

So I email the supervisor guy with this:

while I understand and respect Cathay's policies, however, I would like to have some negotiation regarding hair length and maintence.

I have been growing my hair for almost a year now and take pride in its increasing length. I ensure it is properly maintained by washing it daily and attempt to keep it neat as possible. It is unfortunately too short to tie back completely and too long to gel or style with hair products.

I am prepared to get a slight trim to neaten it up, but would like to continue in keeping its length. I can attempt to comb it back "Mafia style" in accordance to maintaining a neat and respectable appearance.

If possible would we be able to reach some sort of consensus, as I take great pride in my hair. It would be greatly appreciated.

He replied with:

You will need to cut your hair short. We are not able to comply to your request with regards to keeping your hair long. We believed that you will look neat and better with your hair short.

As soon as i read this, i was devastated and am thinking of quitting before i even really start :S

I've put too uch effort into my hair for it to be cut off for a job paying $4.50/hour.

What would you do?

well, most service sector or frontline jobs would require you to look 'presentable'.so well err if you wanna keep your hair, hafta look elsewhere i guess. part time or full time bro?

hmm well i guess it's better to look for another job? If i were you, i wouldnt cut my hair, since it's just a part time job.

Why change your looks and sacrifice for a company that pays you 4.50hr, just to improve on the company's image? Not worth it bro, it's easy to find jobs elsewhere with higher pay.

truthfully speaking, majority of the jobs in singapore does not allow long hair. the worse thing is their definition of "long" is what we see on the heads on boy bands nowadays... anything almost reaching the shoulders is considered "very long", over that is "super uber long"... to them, only crew cut and botak is short...
i would say only jobs that involves creativity are the only jobs left in singapore that will allow u to keep long hair. but thatz not the end, what about reservice? you'll still need to cut it unless you are stephanie, or rather, popstars like JJ. tell them to try asking him back for reservice, they'll either exempt him becuz of his "income" or cook up some other reasons for it.
in other words, there's really no place in singapore that can accept that yet, juz gotta live with it, cuz thatz our society's mentality... same goes for the ratings and showing of cinema films. who gives who the right to decide what we can or cannot watch or do? right?
but on the other hand, long/short/no hair is still subjected to suitability for yourself. not everyone looks good with short/long/no hair.
i can understand how u feel, but i had already sacrificed my beloved hair 2 months after i came back to singapore.
to quote something funny, they tend to say that our long hair is messy, untidy blah blah blah or you can't concentrate because your hair is in the way... tatz total bullshit... someone can look a gazillion times better in long hair then a prick in uniform with short hair anytime, and hell someone can get marksman anytime better than someone with no hair man... it all depends on the person... not the outlook... the authorities that does not have the taste for it doen't mean that it is not accepted...
like i said, who gives who the right to decide anything that we'd like/want to do in the first place? $4.50? you can ask them to shove it up their *** for all i care....

How much are you guys earning?

I was told everyone at cathay cineplex earns $4.50 regardless of race, age or how long they've been working there. its like a communist system. everyone gets $4.50/hour

you're giving up a job for your hair?
though it's $4.50 an hour, but you made that choice to accept the job and obey their policies, so the only option is to cut it..
